[SOLVED] CrunchBang refuses to connect to my university's network.

so, I had a friend tell me about CrunchBang, and I decided to give it a try. then, I ran into the problem of my laptop not seeing any wireless networks, which was fixed with the Broadcom firmware thing. now, as the title says, I can't connect to my school's wireless network. I entered all the necessary information: PEAP, Certificate, MSCHAPV2, username, and password. but all it does is work for a second, tells me to enter my password again, work for a second, tells me to enter my password again, ad infinitum. I've been Googling for days now with no results. can someone help me, please? I apologise in advance for my noobiness, but I'll try my best to be as compliant as possible.

it may or may not be worth noting that CrunchBang is installed on my laptop that I also have Windows 8 and Xubuntu installed on; both of these two have wireless working with no problem. I'd like to really use CrunchBang for a few weeks and see if it's the one I want, but I can't if I can't connect to the internet ;_;

I'm happy to post any information needed.

Check this:

https://wiki.debian.org/wl

Without knowing what your hardware is, it's hard to make an assessment.

Re: [SOLVED] CrunchBang refuses to connect to my university's network.

well, I have a Lenovo g580

when I do

lspci | grep -i wireless

I get

02:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4313 802.11bgn Wireless Network Adapter (rev 01)

that's all I know that's relevant to this particular situation. I'm not sure what else you need; I'm not really good at this sort of thing, I'm sorry.

also, I went to that site when I was trying to figure out how to get my computer to even see any wireless networks, and I really wasn't sure what to do there even.

Ah. BCM4313. You're going to want to follow the instructions for installation for Debian 7 "Wheezy" here:

https://wiki.debian.org/brcm80211

Based on your description: are you trying to connect to the Eduroam account?

a) If yes, then sometimes it is difficult to get all those parameters you mention correctly. It doesn't have to be problem with your WiFi card. Perhaps I can try to help here ... For the test, could you for example try to see if you can connect to some other ('simple', like home WiFi) WiFi network?

b) if no, then discard my suggestion (although, trying to connect to 'simple' Wifi would help, just to rule out whether your WiFi is working or not)

I got to the third step, and I got an error saying "Could not insert 'brcmsmac': operation not permitted."

my school uses Rovernet; I've never seen any mention of Eduroam, so I do not think so.
I can connect to my school's open wifi network just fine, but there's no internet access. it's like that on all of my operating systems, though, so I guess that means it's working to some extent?

Re: [SOLVED] CrunchBang refuses to connect to my university's network.

new information:

I borrowed my roomate's ethernet cable, and it works through that, so I was able to run update, and those commands from the link again. the link still didn't help at all, as I got the same error message.

I downloaded Wicd, and tried to connect through it, and it hangs at the authentication stage and then doesn't connect because of a bad password. even though I'm 100 per cent sure it is correct. I'm hoping that might help shed some light on this situation. any help at all is much appreciated.

Re: [SOLVED] CrunchBang refuses to connect to my university's network.

penny dreadful, sorry for delay ....

'Eduroam' is something, apparently, similar to your 'Rovernet' way of authentication. Which is a bit more involved, compared to simple WiFi WPA password ...

The point is that authentication is performed against remote users database (i.e. not against some user/password data inside WiFi access point).

Why am I talking about this? Because, in my experience with this type of authentication, you may have all your user/pass correctly entered, yet it looks like you are not logged.

Unfortunately, I cannot help you, but in my case trying with different 'protocol' (PEAP, Certificate, MSCHAPV2), I stumbled across working combination. (I do not use it anymore, and I forgot what was right.) The point is that some protocols are differently named in MSWindows and Linux ... don't know why.

I suggest that you visit your admins ... Or even ask friend with MSWindows, and try to see how is his/her connection configured.

Sorry that I couldn't be of more help.

I guess that makes a little more sense. I could try brute forcing with other methods, but I don't know how much good that will do me.
thank you for trying though, maybe someone else might have a little more experience or something?

Re: [SOLVED] CrunchBang refuses to connect to my university's network.

sheding a light would be by looking at some logs, paste the output of the following commands which will help us troubleshoot the issue by having a look at your current system setup ,

first make sure you have' linux-firmware-nonfree '  installed !

$ apt-cache policy linux-firmware-nonfree , if not , then install it !

# load the kernel module as root/super-user :

$ sudo modprobe -r brcm80211
$ sudo modprobe brcm80211
$ cat /etc/lsb-release; uname -a
$ demsg
$ lsmod
$ lshw -C network
$ rfkill list all
$ ifconfig
$ iwconfig
$ sudo iwlist scan
$ iwlist chan
$ nm-tool

# sudo apt-get install rfkill  , if it's not installed!

Now, you have two choices : either go with the vendor  proprietary driver 'wl' , or the open source one  ' brcm80211'  pick one!

if you pick 'wl' , then :

$ sudo su
$ echo "blacklist brcmsmac" >> /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
$ apt-get install bcmwl-kernel-source
$ update-initramfs -u -k $(uname -r)
$ modprobe -r b44 b43 b43legacy ssb brcmsmac
$ modprobe wl
$ exit

Finally , Read the known issue section Here

Re: [SOLVED] CrunchBang refuses to connect to my university's network.

@benginm: his WiFi is working OK, it is matter of 'post-communication' setup with the servers OP, this is why he/she cannot autenthicate.

@OP: I have found my old config ... I am not sure if it works, but this is what you can try (I am talking about Network Connection Manager):

Security: WPA &WPA 2 Enterprise
Authentication: Tunneled TLS (but, try other, as well)
Anon identity: (I let it empty)
CA cert: (for me, it used to work without one)
Inner authentication: PAP (but I would cycle through MSCHAP, MSCHAP2, even CHAP)
...

Re: [SOLVED] CrunchBang refuses to connect to my university's network.

@OP: to my surprise, I have found an old config of my connection:

ctrl_interface=/var/run/wpa_supplicant

network={
      ssid="eduroam"
      proto=WPA2 WPA
      key_mgmt=WPA-EAP
      pairwise=CCMP TKIP
      group=CCMP TKIP
      ca_cert="<your-certificate-file (full path)>"
      identity="<your-identity (i.e. login)>"
      eap=TTLS
    password="<your-password>"
    phase2="auth=PAP"
     }

See if this can help ...

Yeah Right! obviously, but i though they should investigate their system configuration setup before pointing fingers at this and that & whatnot!, and as part of  the user freedom s/he have the right to know how to communicate with the system. then maybe they could learn something for the sake of knowledge instead of " yappin' bout etcetera ".

Good note, but you should also no that Debian have a different philosophy on proprietary software drivers.
Now, please define " wireless working " !

Does apt-cache suggest that you have Eduroam packages installed? In my experience once I have had Eduroam packages installed I have been able to see and connect to university connections.

Re: [SOLVED] CrunchBang refuses to connect to my university's network.

I don't think they needs anything other than consulting their school administration to configure the device to access the school's "WPA2 Secured Wireless Network"

Something like in :   tc.mtu.edu

I have never needed 'Eduroam' package (if it exists at all) on debian-based systems. Only proper configuration parameters like PAP/MSCHAP/whatnot ... And as far as I can remember, the obstacle  have been different terminology: protocol names on MS-based system did not exactly match the protocol names I have to select on #! (or Ubuntu).

Re: [SOLVED] CrunchBang refuses to connect to my university's network.

I have an Atheros card and running Waldorf.  I set the profile up manually at home and dl the certificate from the uni website.  Then when I wen´t do the uni with the laptop everything worked(no extra packages had to be dl)

These are the instructions I followed(my uni), should be the same for you and I think the cert should be the same

well, I did the cache check for linux-firmware-nonfree, and it said it wasn't found. so, I went to install it, and it said that package couldn't be found. so I went to debian's website to get the .deb file, and when I tried to install it that way, it said I already had it installed. I'm confused.

anyway, I loaded terminal as root using

sudo -s

and

Now, please define " wireless working " !

"wireless working" meaning I can connect to the network with no problem.

I can't tell what that did. I had to manually instal bcmwl-kerner-source, because the package was not found through apt-get install.

Does apt-cache suggest that you have Eduroam packages installed? In my experience once I have had Eduroam packages installed I have been able to see and connect to university connections.

no, I can't find anything like that.

I don't think they needs anything other than consulting their school administration to configure the device to access the school's "WPA2 Secured Wireless Network"

Something like in :   tc.mtu.edu

actually, I emailed my school's tech support, because I thought this thread was gonna die. have not recieved a response, yet, though.

looks like  "wl" is loaded but ",lib80211_crypt_tkip" is blocking the way for the crypt authentication! you may need to blacklist " lib80211_crypt_tkip " ...

lets see what 'wl' depends on , Run :

~$ modinfo wl

# well, you should make sure your system  packages is up-to-date
~$ sudo apt-get upgrade && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

else, you might be having an issue in your $bash environment ,  roots .bashrc or even /etc/bashrc got invalid values!

Re: [SOLVED] CrunchBang refuses to connect to my university's network.

^ Oh dear ... Your hardware is working OK. All of above is (mostly) checking your hardware.

It is the protocol authentication problem. I would wait for the answer from your school's tech support. In fact I am interested in this answer as well ...

# please confirm!  because if that's the case, then it's differently a major segfault ' Broadcom' kernel module regression.

now, if you wanna go about troubleshooting this, i don't mind. else i'll leave you in "iMBeCil" hands!, and i hope you'll enjoy the ride. Thanks for flying #!

that is the case. windows didn't make me enter all the info; it just worked. Xubuntu made me enter all the info, but it worked fine after that. #! is giving me the trouble, which is depressing, because I'm otherwise in love with it.

I don't mind troubleshooting in the slightest. it's actually fun, if anything. haha, I just want this to work, so I'm open to anything!

@OP: to my surprise, I have found an old config of my connection:

ctrl_interface=/var/run/wpa_supplicant

network={
      ssid="eduroam"
      proto=WPA2 WPA
      key_mgmt=WPA-EAP
      pairwise=CCMP TKIP
      group=CCMP TKIP
      ca_cert="<your-certificate-file (full path)>"
      identity="<your-identity (i.e. login)>"
      eap=TTLS
    password="<your-password>"
    phase2="auth=PAP"
     }

See if this can help ...

Quoting this because to me it seems like one essential part of the configuration and probably it was not noticed by OP wink
