DDoS Attack (part 1)

The #! repo server and torrent tracker are currently the targets of a DoS attack and are offline. The attack is being monitored and I hope to have normal service restored soon. Apologies for the inconvenience, but this is somewhat out of my control hmm

****

Note: Edit to add by chillicampari- the repository being offline affects the cb-welcome post install script, so please don't run it until this is resolved. If you have a new install, please cancel out of the script. Thank you! - cc

Be strong Philip everything's gonna be alright  smile

When something bad happens you can either act like a victim or learn. If there's hate in the atmosphere to me it sounds like jealousy of your success so keep your head up :-)

Re: DDoS Attack (part 1)

I hope the service will be restored soon but, I hope attackers will have in real life the same hurt as their jealousy, hate and their rotten heart hurt to the humanity.
Keep strong Philip, your work (and community too) will be stronger than that bunch of jealous.

Wow. Who would want to target CrunchBang? As unfortunate as this event is, I cannot help but be curious as to the identity and motive of the perpetrator.

Unknown at the moment and I do not like to assume anything. Still waiting for more details.

Re: DDoS Attack (part 1)

This is a shame. Too many folks think wrecking stuff is some sort of achievement. I'm new to #! but I am very fond of it. Have it on my main machine and hope to get it on the laptop once this DOS nonsense is resolved. Big thank-you to #! team, all one of you. smile

Re: DDoS Attack (part 1)

An update from Matt at Linode:

I just checked on the attack again for you and I'm afraid it is still going very strong. In regards to giving you information on the attack, it's less a matter of us not wanting to help you, but rather we ourselves have little information due to the nature of a large DDoS attack. There is not one attacking IP source, but instead a huge multitude of them. Additionally, each one of those sources is most likely spoofed as they do not care about receiving any data in response, making us unable to see the true origin of the attacking packets.

I hope this helps to clarify and I assure you we will restore normal connectivity as soon as we are able to.

The team at Linode have been responding to my requests for information in a very timely manner. If I manage to get any further information, I will pass it on. Apologies again for the downtime and thank you all for your patience.

P.S. Updating the topic title as DoS != DDoS

Re: DDoS Attack (part 1)

I really like this distro. I own 3 computers (desktop, laptop, netbook) and have #! on the three of them. I was reinstalling #! on the laptop 'cause I made a mess with the deb-multimedia.org repos.

Anyway, keep up the good work, we owe a lot to corenominal and the #! team and community. Fend off the attackers!!

(If anyone wonders, if you try to install #! while the server is down, after installing and runing post-install bash script, the script fails to conect to crunchbang and it breaks the install. After rebooting, it just loads a black screen with a black X cursor.)

Re: DDoS Attack (part 1)

Since torrent is the only official iso image distribution path, maybe adding some backup trackers to the torrent files is worth a thought? This would keep the torrenting alive, since DHT doesn't seem to be used widely.

Since I maintain a server which already serves as a crunchbang mirror via http and rsync and also has a tracker running, I would be happy to let it serve as a backup tracker for the torrents as well.

I installed #! on my netbook an hour ago and this exact scenario happened. I tried again but was not met with cb-welcome the second time.

I also re-installed #! on my other machine this morning which went fine, but tried updating later which broke when contacting the crunchbang server. I came here to post a thread and lo and behold. I picked a weird day to install.

Best of luck to the devs and admins.
