[solved] standalone audio visualizer for the terminal, works with alsa

edit: please see posts #13 and #14 for a solution.

hello again,

that's my question basically.
something like the fire python script.

there is bb, but it seems to be impossible to get it to work with music.

i have seen sth very simple on some poeple's screenshots, like bars, maybe it's not even for the console.

anything at all?

edit: ALSA only.

it seems to be almost impossible to get anything standalone at all.
most apps are old, seems the era of audio vis is over.
please, just a little rhythmic flicker on my screen!

Projectm is pretty good, the standalone version requires pulse or jack though. It also has plugins for clementine and qmmp.

Re: [solved] standalone audio visualizer for the terminal, works with alsa

yes, gutterslob, that ncmpcpp thingie seems to be it.
unless anyone has seen anything else (for the terminal), i guess i'll try to install it.

pvsage, i went through most of the links listed there, but many are dead or so old that they just won't compile or once i get them compiled they only run with jack (or esound!)... and they're not for the terminal anyway.

gutterslob, did you actually get bomb to work? even the sourceforge link is dead.

Re: [solved] standalone audio visualizer for the terminal, works with alsa

thanks for the arch forum link; i'll try to merge efforts (and you will probably notice that i'm using different aliases across the net ;-)
of course, after realising that there's probably nothing for the terminal, i started trying the non-cli variants, so don't be sorry.
i forgot to mention fische - it's one of the links there. i just downloaded the .deb and copied the executable to my ~/bin - it works nicely but doesn't have customization options.

Re: [solved] standalone audio visualizer for the terminal, works with alsa

i installed mpd & ncmpcpp, and the visualiser is working as expected. cool!

i also noticed that with mpd i can output sound to more than 1 outputs, e.g. to a pipe, as needed for the ncmpcpp visualizer.
i thought i could use this to use some other visualizers that i previously discarded because they don't work with alsa.
however after literal hours of trying i'm nowhere...
i have installed sndpeek, projectm including alsa plugins, xoscope and synaesthesia.
can anybody help with any of these?

mpdviz -f /path/to/your/fifo --icolor=true --scale=2 --step=8 -v spectrum -d true

Looks interesting. I'll try it out as soon as I get home.

Sorry about that. I accidentally posted my password in IRC and I had the same password set here so they changed my signature.

Re: [solved] standalone audio visualizer for the terminal, works with alsa

thanks karlstav.
that's a nice addition to cli audio vis.
i esp. like that you included instructions to set up a loopback device.
the vis is responsive - i see what i hear. important.
i think the choice for frequency is good, too.
however i miss some settings for sensitivity.
it seems most apps discussed here use the fftw libraries anyway, have you managed to get in there and adjust sth?
curious to hear.

about fonts:
any way to use the font you provided with a normal terminal app inside X?
i wasn't able to use the microhei font, it seemed to default back to ...well, the default font, even after rebooting (after installation).

anyhow, urxvt uses up to 40% cpu with this, whereas xterm and st are just fine. strange.
