I usually run the mpd server and control it via MPDroid from the phone. I sometimes turn on XNoise, some new thing, pretty cool.
Quodlibet for other circumstances, and mplayer for video.

music: guayadeque
video (on monitor): vlc
movies (on tv): xbmc (separate x screen)
To control xbmc from the couch I use XBMC Remote from my Android Smartphone.

I use VLC.
It plays almost all files.

video: mplayer or mplayer2, why: vdpau, easily scriptable (Will probably switch to mpv soon > compiles nicely on wheezy)
audio: rplay script: http://crunchbang.org/forums/viewtopic.php?id=30653
edit: switched to mpv for everything.

☞Video player: VLC
They have everything I want from media programms.

vlc = it works, say no more
I tried smplayer/mplayer, but too many glitches, crashes, and things it wouldn't play
Every music player I've tried does dumb stuff like wanted me to build databases before it will play anything or just generally being a pain about simple tasks like playing a CD.
Audacious came close if only the volume control worked.

VLC for video for many years already in my Mac days. Always had mplayer on hand... and keep going with it, but I hardly ever use it.
Audacious for a year. Just discovered DeadBeeF and liking it. I think It will replace my trusty Audacious.

I don't like to, but I use rhythmbox for music, simply because my iPod still hasn't given up the ghost, and it's one of the few music players which interfaces well with it. I've tried to sync my iPod using gnupod, which would leave me free to see if there is a music player in existence which I actually like, but I've never managed it.
Ah well, maybe it's time for another attempt...
I'm glad someone said something about iPods. I'm looking for something to manage mine with.
I like Qmmp when it works. I can use it with my old winamp skins. Particularly, the same skin I have used since like 1999.

I use rhythmbox to rip my iPod (wish I could rip all the crap I bought on iTunes that has DRM! dangit) into my ~/music/ directory and then use ncmpcpp as my player. Can someone tell me why moc is any better/worse?

Mostly MoC is just more convenient. ]:D Install it, run it, navigate to directory with tunes using arrow keys and [Enter] . Very intuitive interface, pressing the "h'" key brings up the help screen with a list of shortcuts in case you forget whether you want to press Alt-> or Shift->...

Another vote here for QMMP. I also like Amarok for easily managing my music collection and podcasts the way I want, but even on my newer PC it's still quite slow to load up. That's the only thing that stops me using it for everything.
For videos, I've never had any problems with VLC.

MPD + NCMPCPP for music
VLC for videos

Video: mplayer/smplayer because VLC produces screen artefacts & gives generally poor performance IMHO...
Music: Marantz CD63SE cd player, ARCAM A85 amp, Mision 751 speakers
EDIT: I'll probably get a USB DAC & some active speakers when I get rich (ha ha ha...)

And I also make use of minitube. Cool app.

I like speed, I want to maximize my available ram, and I don't care about playlists or how beautiful a player looks, so I use mpg123 to shuffle-play all my mp3s (opens instantly, uses about 2.5mb). Of course it can do a lot more than that, but that's all I need it for, so it works just great for me.
For video, usually mplayer (fast but no ram advantage). VLC sometimes when I need more GUI controls or for the rare DVD/CD.

vlc for videos

video:
mpv, compiled from source and linked against the real FFmpeg
Very easy to do so thanks to the included build scripts.
VA-API works better than in VLC, winner combo with SMTube.
audio:
Clementine - mainly for the built-in radio streams. 8o
Aqualung for large libraries, audio ripping.
mpv if I can't play some format.
OT: All running on ALSA, no LulzAudio. ]:D
