Just a minor footnote:
When you install Ubuntu, one of the built-in bookmarks in Fireweasel is for Debian with the line "Ubuntu is based on Debian". When you run cat /etc/debian_version or debian_something you get wheezy/sid.
It may not be everyone's cup of tea and I'm open to be convinced that Canonical is a malignant force in open source but ... and there's the rub: they wear their Debian credentials openly.
As for RMS, I think he's the unruly customer-unfriendly conceptual genius you'd have on your team but with a cast-iron containment strategy in place to keep him from doing any real damage.
they wear their Debian credentials openly.
Actually, they don't. Mark Shuttleworth has said that Debian is part of the Ubuntu ecosphere, instead of the other way around. You can't find the words "Debian" or "Linux" on the Ubuntu web page unless you go down a level or two (or three or four or five). In fact, Canonical refers to the distro as Ubuntu OS in press materials. I could go on, but I think the point is made.
Not sure if this proves or disproves what you say but it is what came top of the list when I Googled "Ubuntu and Debian".
wannabe socialist capitalists
Socialist =/= Capitalist
lenin-bot is a dictionary; your argument is invalid.
I was about to write a lot, but your post is more concise, so I'll just refer to this instead
I don't use Ubuntu. I don't have any deep philosophical reason not to, it's just too damn slow these days on the less than stellar spare hardware that I have available for testing. I quite liked it before Unity as back then it was a useful OS that looked nice, ran well and had all the packages that I wanted.
I'm not sure what difference it makes how deep on their site they put a page talking about Debian. If you look at their "About Ubuntu" page (linked from the home page) there is a link right at the top for "Ubuntu and Debian". This is not dissimilar to other distributions, for instance Linux Mint also talks about Ubuntu and Debian on their "About" page.
Like it or don't like it, use it or not as you see fit but come on guys, it's not a matter of life and death, it's just one of many free Linux distributions out there. They may run their forums with less tact and charm than this one but they are way more popular and probably have to deal with a lot more crap than we do.
Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.
Yawn. The crunchbang forum eats itself again. So many haters here, so much intercine ethnic fighting.
I seriously considered closing this thread at page 2, even when the Hitler image macros were amusing me; I'm sorry that I allowed it to continue. This thrread is bad and we should feel bad.
