[SOLVED] unable to connect wired Ethernet Broadcom BCM4401-B0

Hello there!
I think I put last post in the wrong place... so I rewrite it and here it is.

My wired Ethernet card Broadcom BCM4401-B0 100 Base-TX of my Acer Aspire 3690 laptop works normally in the Waldorf 20130119 USB live session: it loads the b44 module and all works smoothly... as it did with Statler out-the-box. Once Waldorf is installed, there's not eth0 with ifconfig, even the device is shown with lshw . I've tried to load the b44 module with modprobe, but the exit said:

#modprobe b44
ERROR: could not insert 'b44': Exec format error

Following the instructions in the "read before posting" post, I've searched the Debian Wiki and Forum, but I couldn't find (or understand...) anything related. I've read about the firmware, but the firmware-linux-free and nonfree packages are installed. Even modinfo give the information about b44, but I don't know if this means something.

When I begin to use Ubuntu 9.04, I had the same problem in the same laptop. The solution was to wait and install Ubuntu 9.10.
Now I'm using my laptop, the wireless connection in working perfectly, but in my university department the wired connection is fast enough to prefer it over the wireless.

Well, I think this all, if someone needs more info about the laptop, just tell me.

Down I put the exits of the ifconfig and lshw.

See you and good day!!

lspci -knn

will show what driver, if any, is in use. Auntie Google suggests the driver might be misidentified.

Thanks for your reply!
I could post just the relevant part (the two network devices) but I don't know if you need this all.

Re: [SOLVED] unable to connect wired Ethernet Broadcom BCM4401-B0

the driver athk5 is the driver for the wireless connections with the  Atheros AR2413/AR2414 Wireless Network Adapter, and it is working (I'm using it right now), but the issue is with the wired Broadcom BCM4401-B0 100Base-TX. This card is detected, but I can't still load the b44 driver for it.

In theory, the b44 module is in the kernel already <http://wiki.debian.org/ModulesAll?highl … |%28b44%29> but I can't load it.

I've read in a lot of places (really, I don't remember where tongue ) that say there is an incompatibility between the b44 driver and others for Broadcom cards, but they talk about a blacklist that is not in my laptop, so I can't do nothing (my knowledge is the limit!) from that point.

Thanks for you replies!!

Re: [SOLVED] unable to connect wired Ethernet Broadcom BCM4401-B0

and for you, VDP76, I have some questions after reading the link you have posted:
1) I don't find any /etc/rc.conf! Does it mean I have to create it or copy it from other?
2) There is a /etc/modules, and there I put the b44 driver to load at boot (or that's I think that file do), but nothing have happened yet.

Well, I think those are the questions... thank you!

Re: [SOLVED] unable to connect wired Ethernet Broadcom BCM4401-B0

This is not normal. And it is probably the reason why module b44 is not loaded.

I would try re-installing the kernel package.
Let us know if that helps.

Re: [SOLVED] unable to connect wired Ethernet Broadcom BCM4401-B0

I have reinstalled the kernel package via synaptic, but the wired ethernet card is not working yet.

Re: [SOLVED] unable to connect wired Ethernet Broadcom BCM4401-B0

Hello!

I'm still trying to enable my wired card, but nothing yet...

I have compiled and the b44 driver from the Broadcom website, but I haven't find a package with the ssb driver. Does anybody know where I can find it?

By the other side, how can I copy the files and the configuration from the live session usb to my laptop? I don't know if this is even possible, but as I said in my first post, the wired Ethernet works in live session, so I think that is (in my noob logic) a way to make it works...

Waiting for your comments... Nice weekend!!

b44 and ssb come with the kernel package. There should be no need to recompile them.
Perhaps your recompilation has left remnants of a b44 kernel module in a wrong format? Try to uninstall what your compilation has installed.

Re: [SOLVED] unable to connect wired Ethernet Broadcom BCM4401-B0

Hello!

After a fresh reinstall of Waldorf, I'm at the same place... but I think I've found something:

After a regular upgrade, I've found this outpout

Following the b44 module dependencies, I've found this:

I don't know of all this means something, because ssb module depends of mmc_core, I see an issue with this module...

rcastellanod@rhuks-3690:~$ modinfo mmc_core

the same output with

$sudo modprobe mmc_core

$sudo modprobe /lib/modules/3.2.0-4-686-pae/kernel/drivers/mmc/core/mmc_core.ko

Re: [SOLVED] unable to connect wired Ethernet Broadcom BCM4401-B0

Post output of

sudo su
file $(modinfo mmc-core 2>&1 | head -n 1 | awk '{print $2}')

please.

Run the commands in a terminal window.
Copy/paste the second command in the terminal window to avoid typos.

Re: [SOLVED] unable to connect wired Ethernet Broadcom BCM4401-B0

Haven't seen this before.
I suspect an 'architecture' problem.
Post output of

cat /proc/cpuinfo

You are using an i686 kernel. Are you sure your system architecture is 32-bit?
If it is 64-bit try installing the 64-bit version of #!

Re: [SOLVED] unable to connect wired Ethernet Broadcom BCM4401-B0

Hi,
Sorry for questioning your linux capabilities  smile

Am I correct in saying that it is the upgrade that brings along these problems?
Is your system usable at all, apart from the network problem?

Can you re-install, not do any upgrade and test if the command

sudo modinfo mmc_core
lsmod

works OK?

Seems like the exec format of some - or all? - your modules is not recognized. I have no idea why.

If everything is OK, then run an upgrade, reboot, and test if everything still works as before.
In the upgrade, your initramfs will be rebuilt. Check if you receive the same errors as you posted before.

Hope this helps.
Cheers.

Re: [SOLVED] unable to connect wired Ethernet Broadcom BCM4401-B0

Hello!

To answer your last question: well, not exactly. I see the output of the mmc_core module after a upgrade, an then I see there's an issue with that module, but before that it had the same problem.

I have re-installed Waldorf (again...), and without do any upgrades, the problem is still there...

Well, I think I have to wait to the Waldorf stable release... unless you have other suggestion, so I'll be waiting for it...

Thanks!

Re: [SOLVED] unable to connect wired Ethernet Broadcom BCM4401-B0

To the best of my knowledge you are the only one reporting this problem.
So it must be something specific for your system/installation.
I am afraid waiting for the wheezy release will not solve this.

Install package 'lshw' if you can, run the command

sudo lshw

and post the result in this forum.

Re: [SOLVED] unable to connect wired Ethernet Broadcom BCM4401-B0

Well, it's really weird! as I said in my first post, the wired ethernet works perfectly with Statler out-the-box.
Thinking about you have said, could it be an USB installation issue? I installed Waldorf following the "recommended method", using a USB flashdrive, but I don't know how to test or prove this issue... besides this problem.

Thank you for all your post!

Re: [SOLVED] unable to connect wired Ethernet Broadcom BCM4401-B0

Run

sudo md5sum /dev/sdx

on the usb stick - replace x with the correct value for your stick - and compare with the md5sum on the download page to make sure your image on the stick is OK.

for f in /etc/modprobe.d/*.conf; do
    echo $f
    cat $f
    echo ""
done

Paste this in a terminal window and post the output please.
