[Solved] Importing Outlook Mail .pst files to Icedove, Evolution, etc.

Hi,

I've got a new job in London and am vacating the institution I currently work at. For years I've used their outlook webmail service. After all these years, this has landed me with rather large mail folders. Now what I want to do is import them into a debian based mail client.

I have already installed pst-utils, which allowed me to use readpst to convert the files into mbox format, which debian is able to read.

I'm now trying to import them into Icedove. However, going through the import option on icedove I am asked what file type to import from- only it gives me no file type options! So I get stuck there. readpst does have an option to make the conversion of the .pst file into a Thunderbird friendly format (still mbox, but with extra info it says). Though I don't think this would make any difference, as there is simply no file type option in Icedove anyway.

I am now thinking of trying with Evolution, as it apparently is able to read .pst files immediately, via the libpst package it comes with. Though Evolution is Gnome based, so I'm slightly reticent.

I was wondering if anyone else has successfully gone through a similar procedure, and what recommendations others might have to help me sort this out.

Thanks, people.

Hi dura,

are the mails still on the server? If yes, you can use Icedove/Iceape or Thunderbird to fetch them from the server and archive them on the disk. And what about Claws/Sylpheed, had a try already? Before you Evolute you better Claw smile

Ha! Hi Mr Bacon. Thanks for this. They are still on the server. I will go and try and get them and archive them. How did I forget Claws... I hadn't been thinking, obviously.

Why don't you just add a POP account in any client, and have it download everything?

Cheers. I've downloaded and archived everything now. Seems the .pst way is useless to me.

Re: [Solved] Importing Outlook Mail .pst files to Icedove, Evolution, etc.

Using Icedove to archive the emails only archived them on the imap server I'm connected to. It didn't download them (it said 'downloading', but I cannot find them stored on my machine anywhere).

The best way I've found to do move mail from an outlook service to another address, using Icedove at least, is to select all emails, right click, and copy them to my gmail account. It just sends them over.

I've still got the .pst file just in case, but it seems to be working.

That's IMAP, it relies on a server. If you want to download the messages to your computer, you want to set up a POP account.

I don't think I am able to create a pop account due to institution restrictions.

Thanks for that el_koraco. I love emailing the university computer services department to inform them that their support is rubbish and *I* have managed to solve problems their reliance on MS causes.

Evolution has the option to download all the IMAP messages for offline use. Weird that Thunderbird doesn't, but Evolution is probably the single best client I've used now that they fixed it up. It used to be slow and crash periodically. Though it's useless outside of Gnome really.

Yer. I noticed. I found evolution strangely difficult to set up when I used it on Mint 10/11. Icedove is miles behind Thunderbird. Maybe it will come with the option in the future.....also it seems the archiving may be done to local...maybe...

Re: [Solved] Importing Outlook Mail .pst files to Icedove, Evolution, etc.

I found where icedove stores archived messages. Hadn't actually looked... It's just .icedove.

Stores them as mbox format, again rendering them pretty awkward to use.

Yup, and its good. I can just open them and read them with geany. mbox files are just a mess of encryption mostly it seems.

You can just open an mbox file with any mail client. It's not a matter of encryption, mbox sorting is slower and less flexible than maildir.
