Re: How To: smxi Install and Setup

xaos52 wrote:

You can enable both repos and install both kernels on the same system, all it takes is some disk space and a couple lines in the grub menu.

When your system is recent go for the most recent kernel.
Test which one works best for you.

As to the differences between them, I don't know.

I myself use the most recent kernel from sid.

My conclusion is: if all your HW works with a certain kernel, then the only reason to go for a customized kernel would be because some new functionaity was introduced in the new kernel that you find interesting.

Otherwise you as an end user will not notice any differences in performance between the different kernels.

Thanks for all the info! So,  i'll try out between liquorix and siduction (hoping one ore another would solve my problems)

Since you're very experienced: Are you aware of some instructive (and to an average user understandable wink ) site regarding the powermanagement problems (which seem to be general on this machine; after kernel 3.2 ... I was contacted by 2 other persons having the same identical issues i've)?

Re: How To: smxi Install and Setup

Another question regarding smxi and siduction: I tried to install the siduction ressources and there is added this repository (in /etc/apt/sources.list.d): "deb ftp://ftp.spline.de/pub/siduction/siduction unstable main"

Seems correct to me. But when i do an update i'm getting this error:

W: Fehlschlag beim Holen von ftp://ftp.spline.de/pub/siduction/siduction/dists/unstable/main/binary-amd64/Packages Datei konnte nicht heruntergeladen werden; Server meldet: »Failed to open file. «

W: Fehlschlag beim Holen von ftp://ftp.spline.de/pub/siduction/siduction/dists/unstable/main/binary-i386/Packages Datei konnte nicht heruntergeladen werden; Server meldet: »Failed to open file. «

E: Einige Indexdateien konnten nicht heruntergeladen werden. Sie wurden ignoriert oder alte an ihrer Stelle benutzt.

[Sorry, that's in german: Essentially it says, the server says: "Failed to open".]

Now, i tried to install the keyring newly but to no extent. I understand this msg, that a) the server exists and has been contacted, but that b) it refuses - for some, to me unknown reason, to open the file/repository. And since the keyring results to be correct, it should be something else (than missing authorization). May be there is another server, i could try with?

TIA

PS. I googled a bit and i found something but it's old (from 2010 and refers to sidux/aptosid, not siduction).

Thanks a lot. Substituting spline with uni-stuttgart made it work like a charm big_smile

Re: How To: smxi Install and Setup

I tried to install the liquorix kernel and I got a bunch of errors

E: There are problems and -y was used without --force-yes
There was a problem with install of linux-headers-3.9-9.dmz.1-liquorix-amd64 linux-image-3.9-9.dmz.1-liquorix-amd64
Warning: missing /lib/modules/3.9-9.dmz.1-liquorix-amd64
device driver support thus needs to be built-in linux image!

Edit: also now I can't dist-upgrade because liquorix wants to grab some kind of ubuntu stuff and putting that package on hold (wine1.6) just results in apt saying I have to do apt-get -f install which doesn't fix anything hmm
2nd Edit: figured out the issue is liquorix repo wants the newer wine but I can't use that one because I want to keep playonlinux which requires the version of wine I currently have that's conflicting with liquorix. Is the siduction kernel as good as the liquorix one?

Alright so the siduction kernel installed but I still have the weird issue just like with the 3.9 kernel from the debian testing repo where my fn + volume keys don't work and changing the brightness with the fn keys works but the brightness change is delayed and laggy hmm

Edit: Found out all I had to do was add asus_nb_wmi to /etc/modules. Feel free to delete my post in here big_smile

Re: How To: smxi Install and Setup

I need to install drivers for Intel GMA 3600 so I can adjust my screen brightness.  Is smxi the best way to go about doing that?  Is there a simpler way?  I don't want to mess crunchbang up...

Re: How To: smxi Install and Setup

I know this thread is old.  Hopefully someone can answer.  After installing the nvidia driver, my fonts are too large while on tty and I can't read everything that smxi outputs on the screen.  I like to know what the upgrade or dist-upgrade have to offer before I commit.  is there a way to reduce fonts at this level?
I will appreciate some help.  I have searched the net with no luck.

Re: How To: smxi Install and Setup

job, which nvidia card do you have specifically?  I went the traditional debian installation route for my nvidia quadro fx 2800m and have had no issues whatsoever.  I've got zero experience with smxi but don't personally see much need for it based on my current system stability.  Have you tried the standard debian installation method for your graphics?

Re: How To: smxi Install and Setup

hey, thanx for this.

i installed liquorix last night. but when i boot it via grub, i get a weird glitch. im not really sure how to describe it... the screen isn't "centered" correctly. the far right side of the screen appears to wrap around to the left by like 350 pixels. and the bottom 2 or so pixels are on the top of the screen. i didnt change anything else but the kernel. suggestions for debugging? that's not called "tearing" is it?

Re: How To: smxi Install and Setup

@Xero
try to reinstall graphic drivers for new kernel.

@Job
in terminal (no tty ;-))
apt-get install console-setup             #installed per default; i think so

$your_default_editor /etc/default/console-setup         #FONTSIZE="7x13"  for example

/etc/init.d/console-setup restart

Re: How To: smxi Install and Setup

cloverskull,
Here is the card EVGA GeForce GTX 660.  You think the installation via smxi could be the problem?
Thanks

Re: How To: smxi Install and Setup

Yeah, try this.  Just do

lspci -nn | grep vga

To make sure that #! is reporting the card that you expect.  Next, make sure you have in your /etc/apt/sources.list

deb http://http.debian.net/debian/ wheezy main contrib non-free

Run

sudo apt-get update

and next run

 sudo apt-get install linux-headers-$(uname -r|sed 's,[^-]*-[^-]*-,,') nvidia-kernel-dkms

Next, do the following two lines to generate an xorg config:

mkdir /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d
echo -e 'Section "Device"\n\tIdentifier "My GPU"\n\tDriver "nvidia"\nEndSection' > /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-nvidia.conf

Make sure that if you made any changes to your xorg.conf for graphics settings, please remove them completely.  Also if you can undo anything the smxi script installed, that would probably help make sure there are no conflicts.  Let me know how it goes smile

Re: How To: smxi Install and Setup

What a reminder!  smxi is such a great script that I became lazy.  I have used the steps above in the past.  Thanks mate!

I even used those steps but my verbose fonts are extremely large, something I wanted to avoid.  mad

has failed for unknown reasons. Sorry, we did our best.

I managed to remove this kernel, should I try and older kernel? I think the newer kernel needs gcc 4.8 not my waldorf gcc 4.4.
Any help with getting a liquarix kernel working would be great

Re: How To: smxi Install and Setup

You can install the liquorix kernel yourself using the guide here: just add the repo to /etc/apt/sources.list.d/liquorix.list as instructed, run "sudo aptitude update", install the keyring (as instructed), then perform:

apt-cache search linux-image

Then "sudo aptitude install" the liquorix kernel you want...
smile
Although the liquorix kernel does offer advantages over the standard Debian kernels (eg BFQ scheduling, instead of the standard Completely Fair Scheduling...), it is classed as a "sid" (unstable) source: it may be better to use the backported kernel instead for better system stability...
