Previously, all #! images have been able to fit on a CD, but I am considering if this is now a pointless limitation?
Personally, I cannot remember the last time I used a CD as an install medium, I always tend to use a USB stick, as it is much faster and greener.
When was last time you used a CD to install #!, or any other distribution?

Never. Have always used (rewriteable) DVD's as the CD's aren't as available over here.

Always.
But my dvdrw broken and now I have only one option, usb sticks. Do you like usbsticks?

I still have one test machine that will not boot from USB, so I use CD-RW for that one. I also have a small collection of "utility" CDs (systemrescueCD, gparted live, some puppy linux) as it's easier to grab a CD and use it than to rewrite a USB stick.
I don't think 700 MB is a pointless limitation if you want to encourage people with older machines to try #!. What do you need to add that will push it over the limit? Could more options be added to the startup script so people could choose to download the extra apps?

What do you need to add that will push it over the limit?
It is less about what I need to add, more about what would need removing. The introduction of GTK 3 and other libraries has pushed the images to the absolute limit

Thanks for explaining.

I use CD's because: They are cheap. I've got a stack of them. They are easy to label.

I use rw-dvds and usb sticks now, so it is Ok with me.
Time to move on!#

How about a light crunchbang, like back in the day? 700mb "light" and all the good stuff 4,7GB max.

Well, it's not a huge problem, at least not at the moment, I am just testing the water

corenominal - are you using xz compression to make the squashfs file? If not, try it as it compresses much better and I'm sure you'd be able to cram what you need in 700MB.
If you are already using it, then maybe Awebb's suggestion is good.

Last month I had to use the CD image to install #! on my mother-in-law's PC. It could/would not boot from usb and only had a cd drive.

new to crunchbang.
my first linux kernel build was on a 386-16sx with 6MB SIPP RAM ($50/MB!)

You know, I only used the "big" image once back then. I usually end up removing pre-installed software and add my own anyway. It would be nice if there still were download statistics from the days, you could easily check how many unique downloads the light iso had. It might be a good idea to keep track about such things today as well.

I usually just use USB sticks. Most other distros don't fit on a CD anyway, and CDs and DVDs are not worth the price around here for me. Also, not having to wait too long for the image to be copied over, and not having to futz around with md5sum is a big plus too.

i burn to CD. but if it'd be bigger i'd have no problem using a DVD instead. or a USB-stick for that matter.

Same as pidsley, I have a collection of utility cd's, along with #! releases from the last 3-4 yrs. Cheap, easy to label etc etc., and older machines aren't able to boot from usb.
I also like the idea of keeping it below 700MB - psychologically it keeps #! separate from the heavyweights, for me anyway. But is that a good reason for superdev to bust a gut keeping the size down?

USB stick if the computer is able to then I would revert to CD/DVD.

I'd say if like Awebb wrote we have two images, it would be really cool if its really lightweight - talking cli applications lightweight

so, for the sake of the old hardware (which is one of #!'s target audiences, apparently), it would at least be good to have a light-version, imo.

I usually install from a USB stick but I have used CDs quite often recently.
To me, the main advantage of CDs is that I can burn them quite easily, whereas I need to check the instructions for copying the iso to USB every time I want to do it.
I've made a huge mistake

I do not see the need for a light-version where one could do a netinstal or business card install and add the #! hooks and setup and have exactly what they want.
You cannot get anymore minimal than that and it does not add a massive support/creation piece to corePa's already loaded plate.

^ & ^^ i have no experience with netinstalls so that is why i didn't think of that option. certainly true.
