I just read the wikipedia article of the book from above.
When I saw the timeline with dates of when to expect what I just thought: "BULLSH...!"
has anybody of you read this book ?
IMHO writing about Singularity should be in the fiction genre.
-> I think it's more likely that something utterly unintended by mankind will happen. Like the Hive Mind of the Interwebs becoming self-aware. Maybe it already is..
(Hive-Mind-of-the-Interwebs, if you see this, please PM me. We have to talk)
edit: I'am about to watch Transcedent Man. A documentary based on that book. anyone knows this movie?
edit: One thing that is always present in the movie is the fear of decay and death.
edit: beeing half through the documentary I am starting to challenge the sanity of the author of the book.

You read a wikipedia article and deem yourself qualified to have an opinion? You watch a documentation (again, instead of reading the book) and question the author? Yes, that's it.
Read the damn book, instead of jumping around it like a boyscout 'round the campfire. Kurzweil actually describes not science-fiction, but a scientific probability with scientific precision.

For all we know, this could be the subject of this thread.

There came quite a lot before that. A whole live of scientific interrest and studies in a field not completely unrelated to that topic. So yes, I deam myself qualified to have an opinion on this, always.
But read my post again. It is not as opinion-heavy as you seemed to think.
When I saw the timeline with dates of when to expect what I just thought: "BULLSH...!"
What else can one say if one reads this timeline in a scientific context. It was nothing more than a first reaction. I thought I made that clear.
the second piece of opinion is this
beeing half through the documentary I am starting to challenge the sanity of the author of the book.
srsly, if you saw the documentary that would be your thoughts, too. I am certain of this.
Kurzweil actually describes not science-fiction, but a scientific probability with scientific precision.
Thats what I said. And that's what I say is the problem.
Read the damn book, instead of jumping around it like a boyscout 'round the campfire.
Half the round around the campfire was because of the documentary, so watch the damn documentay before you question my opinion. EDIT: @Awebb: lets not make it more personal than this, k?
Nowhere I have said anything about the book besides that the Timeline seems to be BS on a first glance. And that predicting the Singularity should be in a sci-fi context.
I am sure there are other good aspects of the book. Like "what will happen if there is the Singularity". It's in the documentary, too. But even all the scientists in the doc say that Kurzweil should be more modest with his predictions.
@Awebb: have you read the book?
finally the reasons from the doc why I question Kurzweils sanity:
* he takes 200 pills a day to reprogramm his genetic code. He invented the pills himself etc
* he hopes to revive his father by collecting all the information about him and hoping to be able to transfrer this into an AI.
* Kurzweil uses a lot of religous vocabulary. Speaking of creating Gods. He calls himself a "Singularitan" etc.
The ovarall feeling is "very unscientific"
and ... Arguing with Awebb is so exciting. As to be expected from the forums Singularity ;)

^ nah man, i was just joking around with the first conspiracy-thing that popped into my mind
to be honest, i need to check this Kurzweil-dude out, i never heard of him before this thread. his ideas sound weird, but that's usually the type of idea i find interesting

Hmmm perhaps the one that is about 4 miles away from my house that I frequently purchase books from didn't get the
out of business
memo yet.
