This is the cause of it.
It is a problem with the source you downloaded.
It does not compile any more against the current kernel headers.
Look for a more recent source package on the site you downloaded this from.
Or post your problem in their forum, if there is one.

Ok, I can't seem to find any newer drivers. However, I found a thread on Ubuntuforums in which the op claims to have solved the problem.
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2092934
But in that thread, he says he had blacklisted the native drivers at /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf., yet when I go to /etc/modprobe.d/ I find 2 blacklist files:
fbdev-blacklist.conf
and
alsa-base-blacklist.conf
In which one should I copy-paste the blacklist lines for the drivers?

Latest build is RTL8188C_8192C_USB_linux_v3.4.4_4749.20121105. For what it's worth, it works like a champ for me...but only with the older bpo kernel.

Working!!!
And not only "working". Look at this:
Look at the signal difference between the inboard wi-fi and the external card.
Thank you Xaos52 and Pvsage, you are a couple of MASTERS!!!
Anyways, just in case somebody may have the same problem in the future, I downloaded the driver from here:
http://www.realtek.com/downloads/downlo … Down=false
...and then followed the method described by Xaos52 at the beginning of the thread. Don't worry if it doesn't ask you to select a driver. As long as it says "The Setup Script is completed ! " at the end, you're good.
BTW, I have kernel 3.2.0-4, and it's working, so, Pvsage, if you want to update your kernel, now's the time...:)

Glad you got yours working! If you don't mind my asking, which brand wifi dongle are you using? It seems the regression I've been dealing with is specific to the Belkin N300 mini-USB.
EDIT: Oh, and it would often work like blue blazes for a few minutes or a couple days...then suddenly fail, with repeated requests to re-enter the WPA key.

Not at all. I'm using Overtech OG-WN687N1.
Well, we'll see what happens in the future, but, so far, not only it's working, but it's giving me a connection quality I couldn't have dreamed with before. It really doesn't speak too highly of the Atheros card...

t the pedd never ge
anything other than RTL8187L (e.g. RTL8188 RTL8192) - some of them work under Linux, but they are extremely buggy.
http://backtrack.pl/wiki/doku.php?id=en:cards
I've just received 8188cus
8191S (with antenna) works perfectly, the signal is even stronger than built-in.
Update: running iwscanner showed that the module supports only two channels ch1 and ch6. Changing to ch6 did the trick, and the dongle has finally showed my connection. Well, it is good enough to surf the web, the signal is not bad, ping latencies are ok too, dl speed is 5-8M (my connection is 15M)
