Looking for a way to install skype, I found the advice of ghosthunter007 (post 36) in following dusty thread very useful :
http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/topic … te/page/2/
1) download skype:
http://www.skype.com/intl/en-us/get-sky … ter/linux/
2) install skype:
root@crunchbang:/home/fl/downloads# dpkg -i skype-debian_2.2.0.35-1_i386.deb
Notes:
1.You might need libxss1 package.
2.Edited following comment of kbmonkey

Are you having trouble with this? Is this a Help & Support question or a how-to for Tips, Tricks & Scripts?

I needed it. Its good to have the procedure at hand. Aging and Alzheimers disease go hand in hand.
I did not reopened the thread on skype because you closed it last may:

Your step #2 does the same as #3. Oh and you can double-click the .deb setup file if you use a mouse and a graphical window manager, just for your information
Thanks for the information.
However, I had to do step 2 to get the missing dependency. Is there another way to do it?

I just added the official repository:
deb http://download.skype.com/linux/repos/debian/ stable non-free
and
sudo apt-get install skype

Normally you get the .deb form the Skype site and install it graphically with Gdebi or with dpkg from the command line.
@axcraig: I think this repo is also outdated and installs an older version.

@ivanovnegro. Thanks I'll double check the versions when I get home.

Correct, the version from the repo quoted above is not the latest version.

@twapru
Your output says you're missing packages.
Try downloading and installing the missing packages then try skype again.

Maybe try it with Gdebi, right click on the .deb and open with Gdebi, it should install the required dependencies automatically.

aptitude is quite amazing! I got errors as well after installing, so I tried installing the first missing package, and it asked me to remove skype as a solution, I said no, then it suggested to installing the rest of the missing packages. Yes, please!!

I am on a 64bit install of #! Waldorf and installing Skype here isn't that easy.
Fortunately there is a Debian howto on that topic: http://wiki.debian.org/skype
Strictly following that didn't give me success because of missing dependencies.
Here are the steps that got me Skype installed successfully:
# dpkg --add-architecture i386
# apt-get update
# apt-get -f install
After that I downloaded Skype from here: http://www.skype.com/intl/en-us/get-sky … ter/linux/
(choose Debian 7.0 multiarch)
Then I installed it the GUI way with right-click -> Install with GDebi
All good.

Hey all, I'm trying this today with a Lenovo t410 ThinkPad and I'm getting the error: Cannot install 'libc6:i386' when I try to install the .deb file I get from Skype.
Should I try an older version of Skype maybe? I tried fighting with installing that libc6:i386 myself, with no success in terms of installing skype...
Fortune favors the bold.

There's a fair amount of information about it here. Check out libc6:i386 or search the forums or with your favorite search engine.

Never tried it, haven't even read the page but it's from the Debian wiki so it's worth a go...

hi,
you could just delete this dependency by deleting it from the package config file. You need to decompress the deb, edit, re-compress and install. Usually it works in the end.
This worked once for me (and for Google earth) may not work again: put if it fails, just purge it. Google for it.
Otherwise, add architecture, update and -f install should do the trick.

Yes, this works. I've used this info several times in the past while installing Skype on #! or Debian.
