How RMS are you?

I just discovered this awesome little app in the debian repos called vrms (Virtual Richarm M. Stallman). As its name suggests it "will analyze the set of currently-installed packages on a Debian-based system, and report all of the packages from the non-free and contrib trees which are currently installed" (from the man page). You can install it (on Debian-based systems) and run it using:

sudo aptitude install vrms && vrms

I got:

13 non-free packages, 0.8% of 1574 installed packages.
9 contrib packages, 0.6% of 1574 installed packages.

Which I was pretty chuffed with. I think I can count myself as a real Freetard!:D

Re: How RMS are you?

I don't even need to install this package to answer the question, It's simple actually...

On my desktop: I have so many non-free packages and programs on my desktop it would make Richard Stallman fall over and have a heart attack. lol

On my netbook: He wouldn't have a heart attack at this point but he may still scream because I have OpenBSD which apparently lets you modify the ports so you're able to install non-free software. (yeah, don't believe me, go on his website)

lol lol lol
I wonder how many actually get that joke here.
I wish I had saved that "discussion" RMS had with the OpenBSD people. It was epic beyond belief.

One bit I did save was this, though:

Richard Stallman wrote:

I could recommend OpenBSD privately with a clear conscience to someone I know will not install those non-free programs, but it is rare that I am asked for such recommendations, and I know of no practical reason to prefer OpenBSD to gNewSense.

Marco Peereboom wrote:

Here is one, the code isn't bloated and doesn't mostly suck.  I find it unethical to recommend a steaming pile of crap to someone.

The most hypocritical thing is that (at the time, not sure about now) gnewsense came with LAME, which itself recommends and supports unfree stuff (mp3, unrar...etc), among others.

Anyways, desktops run OpenBSD, but the little netbook still runs Linux (Debian/GRML Sid), so;

  8 non-free packages, 0.7% of 1088 installed packages.
  5 contrib packages, 0.4% of 1088 installed packages.

Packages are:
Non-free = figlet, firmware-linux, firmware-linux-nonfree, lha, p7zip-rar, unrar, w32codecs, xfonts-x3270-misc
Contrib = b43-fwcutter, conky-all, firmware-b43-lpphy-installer, firmware-b43legacy-installer, ttf-mscorefonts-installer

Figlet I installed manually to play with, but I don't have a clue how those IBM 3270 Emulator fonts got on my system, tbh. O_o

Re: How RMS are you?

RMS is one of my heroes. If it wasn't for RMS, there would be no "Linux." We should all periodically pause to reflect upon the roots of our beloved GNU/Linux operating system.

RMS started the project to create the GNU/Linux operating system in 1984, before there was a "Linux" in its name, and before people began incorrectly referring to the operating system as "Linux". At the time there existed no operating system that provided the four essential freedoms to its users, which was the motivation for GNU's genesis:

  • Freedom 0: The freedom to use the program for any purpose.

  • Freedom 1: The freedom to study (at the source code level) how the program works and to modify it, if you wish.

  • Freedom 2: The freedom to share exact copies of the program.

  • Freedom 3: The freedom to share your modified versions of the program, if you wish.

Re: How RMS are you?

Lol ... having never actually met the guy, it's all speculation for me. But R Stallman, from interviews and stuff I've seen makes the interesting person and wish well list here. Does seem like an unselfish act started the ball rolling and it's kept rolling for a couple decades now. Guess nobody can dispute he left a mark and the world a better place for it.

The Jebus comment was a bit out there I see. Had a wee bit to drink last night. Xianity for the most part is right up there next to my beloved US gestapo ... errrr govt on the list of things that make me wanna projectile vomit. smile Interesting program, might install that sucker and check it out, thanks VSU for bringing this up.
