From a terminal window, run vlc with the following command:
vlc -vvv 2>&1 | tee vlc.log
This will send a lot of output to the terminal window and capture that output in the file vlc.log
Next try to play the CD in the normal way: select Media > Open Disc > tick Audio CD > click Play
Wait till the CD starts to play or if it doasn start wait a couple seconds and close the VLC window.
Now I would be interested in seeing the content of that log file. (vlc.log in your HOME directory)
It can grow very big in no time at all, so it is probably best to use the #! PASTEBIN (click 'CrunchBang Linux Forums - PASTEBIN is on the top right of the page, some 4 lines down from the top)
