Take a look at Wallpapoz.

From the author:

The most important feature is you could have Gnome and XFCE desktop wallpaper changes when you change workspace. It means you could group your wallpapers into specific workspace.

EDIT:

Found this link to the latest version deb.

Interesting but that's for GNOME or Xfce - wonder what kind of dependencies that would hall down with OpenBox.

Or how CPU intensive it is checking what desktop and what wallpaper ... interesting idea though.

Not sure of the dependencies as I use XFCE. However, here is a list of dependencies as listed here.

    pygtk
    python2
    python2-imaging
    xorg-xprop
    xorg-xwininfo

and from Synaptic on my rig:

python
python-support (>=0.90.0)
python-glade2
python-imaging
x11-utils
python-gnome2

As for the CPU/RAM issue, I see about a 1% or 2% increase in CPU avg and a nominal (if any) RAM impact.

I've seen this : wall_per_desk
But I'm afraid to don't really understand if it's the good thing.
Does wallpapoz could work with openbox ?

Well, if using one of those (Gnome XFCE) I'd say that is really decent!  Nice find.

I just grabbed "wallpapoz_0.6.2-0~ppa5_all.deb" and opened it with GDebi ...
abong3uH.jpg
I didn't install it as I'm not interested in having different wallpapers on different desktops. However, I do believe it will run.  You'd have to try to see.  It's a simple purge if it doesn't.

sudo apt-get purge wallpapoz

Also - that "wall_per_desk" looks interesting as well, but to install feh and imagemagic and convert 2000+ wallpapers to bmp's - I think it's not for me.

Hi !
Great conky stuf again ! Well done.
I had a little question:
How did you display differents background images on each desktop ? (I'm on openbox) I got an idea to display different weather forecast citys on each desktop.(I've got 4)
Thanks

No idea how to display different backgrounds of each desktop but with conkys it's easy.

1. install wmctrl
2 create the conkys you want on a single desktop without "sticky"

own_window_hints undecorated,below,skip_taskbar,skip_pager

3. last lne in OpenBox's autostart bash script starts a StartStopConky bash script:

## Start conkys
(sleep 5s && /media/5/Conky/OBMenuS/S11_T2_SSC.sh) &

And here's mine: S11_T2_SSC.sh

   #!/bin/bash
   # click to start, click to stop

if pidof conky | grep [0-9] > /dev/null
  then
	exec killall conky
  else

# on all desktops
	conky -c /media/5/Conky/S11_Email_1.conky &

# Start with low sleep and build sleep up per desktop to allow conkys to start before switching.
# wmctrl starts with 0 so "wmctrl -s 3" is desktop 4

# on desktop 4 only
#	(sleep 0s && wmctrl -s 3 && conky -c /media/5/conky/Bruce_Conky/S11_HUD3.conky) &

# on desktop 3 only
	(sleep 5s && wmctrl -s 2 && conky) &
	(sleep 5s && wmctrl -s 2 && conky -c /media/5/conky/main.conky) &

# on desktop 2 only (change to 5s if using desktop 3)
	(sleep 7s && wmctrl -s 1 && conky -c /media/5/Conky/S11_Dates.conky) &
	(sleep 7s && wmctrl -s 1 && conky -c /media/5/Conky/S11_VNS.conky) &
	(sleep 7s && wmctrl -s 1 && conky -c /media/5/Conky/S11_Rem_Cal.conky) &
	(sleep 7s && wmctrl -s 1 && conky -c /media/5/Conky/S11_Disk_Activity.conky) &

# on desktop 1 only (change to 10s if using desktop 3)
	(sleep 9s && wmctrl -s 0 && conky -c /media/5/Conky/S11_ConkyForecast_2013) &
     (sleep 9s && wmctrl -s 0 && conky -c /media/5/Conky/S11_Cal_br.conky) &
  exit
fi

Hope that is what you wanted.

It might be usefull wink Thanks again !

Re: Conky v1.9 Thread

S11, thanks for the imput.
This is what I show having when running conky -V

[ichase02@arch64 ~]$ conky -V
Conky 1.9.0 compiled Sun Mar  3 09:38:37 EST 2013 for Linux 3.7.9-2-ARCH (x86_64)

Compiled in features:

System config file: /etc/conky/conky.conf
Package library path: /usr/lib/conky

 X11:
  * Xdamage extension
  * XDBE (double buffer extension)
  * Xft
  * ARGB visual

 Music detection:
  * MPD
  * MOC

 General:
  * math
  * hddtemp
  * portmon
  * Curl
  * RSS
  * Weather (METAR)
  * Weather (XOAP)
  * wireless
  * support for IBM/Lenovo notebooks
  * config-output
  * Imlib2
  * apcupsd
  * iostats
  * ncurses
  * Lua

  Lua bindings:
   * Cairo
   * Imlib2

Truth be told, I had to uninstal and re-install in order to get the remaining items to populate such as Lua bindings.  Now when I run conky -c .conkyrc_HUD nothing comes to the screen and I get a bunch of execution failed: attamtp to call a nil value.

Conky: desktop window (83) is root window
Conky: window type - normal
Conky: drawing to created window (0x1600002)
Conky: drawing to double buffer
Conky: llua_do_call: function conky_draw_bg execution failed: attempt to call a nil value
Conky: llua_do_call: function conky_main execution failed: attempt to call a nil value
Conky: llua_do_call: function conky_draw_bg execution failed: attempt to call a nil value
Conky: llua_do_call: function conky_main execution failed: attempt to call a nil value
Conky: llua_do_call: function conky_draw_bg execution failed: attempt to call a nil value

This just goes on and on until I killall conky.  This is NO DOUBT operator error and lack of experience.  wink

So I guess what you say makes sense.

That's why did: How To: Change the Default Locale

Strange behavior.
I have this installed:

kitsune@:~$ locale -a
C
C.UTF-8
de_DE.utf8
en_GB.utf8
en_US.utf8
es_ES.utf8
fi_FI.utf8
fr_FR.utf8

ko_KR.utf8
pl_PL.utf8
POSIX
ru_RU.utf8
zh_CN.utf8
zh_HK.utf8
zh_TW.utf8
kitsune@:~$

and have no problem with using "pl_PL.UTF-8" as my default

Then I have this leftovers from when I've used external headless server, to setup proper locale for SSH terminal:

  • Ubuntu

    sudo locale-gen --purge pl_PL.UTF-8 en_US.UTF-8
    sudo update-locale
  • Debian

conky version is perfect.

This:

conky -c .conkyrc_HUD

  should be:

conky -c ~/.conkyrc_HUD

if you have it in your home directory.

Lets see what happens.

Hang around this thread long enough and operator error due lack of experience will soon be a thing of the past.

I remember my when I first started with conky ... I was "huh?", "how's that again?", "what now?", "Oops!"

Come to think about it, those are still pretty common in some situations.   roll

I did that because for as much as I installed my Canadian settings the OS deleted it ... HEY!  That's not cool.

I don't need other settings ... my Latin American keyboard handles all the extra stuff I need for Spanish: ñ ó ô ö etc etc

All kinds of stuff --- a = æ Æ or â

If I find out I do, I'll install them.

If you want:

  • different wallpapers on each desktop (switch as you go there)

  • different conkys to match the different wallpapers

that will really come in handy

As you see I have various conkys on each desktop and some that start in windows - open them, look at them. close them.

Yea, know that feeling, been there done the yikes  along with the 8) and the :8 and lots of 0¿0 would ya look at that?

You need the ~/ regardless of where you are in your terminal ...

If you still get errors make sure in the conky you have the paths to the support files correct as well:

Ie from my HUD.conky:

###  LUA Settings  ###########################################################
## Above and After TEXT - requires a composite manager or blinks.
##
 lua_load ~/Conky/LUA/draw-bg.lua
#TEXT
#${lua conky_draw_bg 10 0 0 0 0 0x000000 0.6}
#
## ${lua conky_draw_bg corner_radius x_position y_position width height color alpha}
##
## OR Both above TEXT (No composite manager required - no blinking!)
#
#lua_load ~/Conky/LUA/draw-bg.lua
#lua_draw_hook_pre draw_bg 15 0 0 0 0 0x000000 0.2
#
lua_load /media/5/Conky/LUA/HUD3.lua
lua_draw_hook_post main
#
#######################################################  End LUA Settings  ###
# The all important - How often conky refreshes.
# If you have a "Crey" try: 0.2 - smokin' - but watch the CPU useage go UP!
update_interval 1

## TEXT
TEXT
${lua conky_draw_bg 0 0 0 0 0 0x000000 0.3}\
${image /media/5/Conky/images/VSIDO_ORB_black.png -p 82,45 -s 75x75}\
${image /media/5/Conky/images/4.250.374_2.png -p 0,200 -s 250x374}\

If you put the draw-bg.lua as a hidden file in your home directory it MUST be called like this:

lua_load ~/.draw-bg.lua

HUD3.lua ?  hidden file in ~/ ?

lua_load ~/.HUD3.lua

anywhere else and you need a complete path like I use:

lua_load /media/5/Conky/LUA/HUD3.lua

Same with images, this:

${image /media/5/Conky/images/4.250.374_2.png -p 0,200 -s 250x374}\

if it's a hidden image in ~/ would be:

${image ~/.4.250.374_2.png -p 0,200 -s 250x374}\

with conky you need the paths.  big_smile

You asked about different wallpapers on different desktops.

DrakarNoir found "Wallpapoz" for you to look at.
and you found "wall_per_desk"

I read about wall_per_desk it changes the wallpaper every time you switch to a new desktop, wallpapoz probably does the same so you'll see the change as you switch wallpapers.

ragamatrix wrote:

I have it setup to work with conky in that script.

but ... in a terminal:

wmctrl -s 2 && spacefm -n

will switch you to desktop 3 and start spacefm

It's just that wallpapers are "across the board" if you have 10 virtual workspaces (desktops) one wallpaper covers them all.

wallpapoz and wall_per_desk simply change them as you change desktops.

You can do this with conky - but it means writing a complete below TEXT portion of conky inside an ${if_match}-${else} statment for each desktop...

example:

TEXT
       Desktop ${desktop}
  Desktop Name ${desktop_name}
Desktop Number ${desktop_number}

${if_match ${desktop} == 3}This is 3${else}Not on 3${endif}

for four desktops, and this is just small sections of the same conky, it works but not practical for large conkys in my opinion.

TEXT
${if_match ${desktop} == 1}${image /media/5/Conky/images/orbwallpaperblack.png -s 60x60 -p 0,0}\
${image /media/5/Conky/images/S11_128.png -s 60x60 -p 0,100}\

Re: Conky v1.9 Thread

Nice start; the end product will be something neat to see.

Post the code or link for the wallpaper script.

I agree with PackRat - post a link to or the script you found, please - will be nice to see.

I am curious to see how many wallpapers it will  handle.  I have a lot
