Any musicians among us?

VastOne and I were just talking music in a thread in Introductions (sorry, Hugh), and I was just wondering: How many musicians do we have among us?

Enough to form Sgt. Corenominal's Lonely Hearts Club Band, maybe? :-)

I play the guitar and a variety of valved brass instruments, a holdover from playing in the marching band in high school (these include trumpet, coronet, baritone and tuba).

Anyone else?

Re: Any musicians among us?

BTW, lcafiero - I sang Ripple to my daughter as a babe too.. She is now 19 and on her own in this grand ole journey of life..

Got a kick out of talking to her and my 15 year old son on Christmas day... Finding out about her first escapades with a certain doobage ... we all laughed until we cried...

Re: Any musicians among us?

I'm a lapsed trumpet player; I was actually in the Army Band a couple decades ago.  A few years ago I started to try to learn to play guitar.  I keep meaning to push myself to practice both instruments...usually unsuccessfully... roll

Re: Any musicians among us?

I just play the piano regularly now, but when I was at school I learnt the tenor & descant recorder, and the clarinet. We've just bought our daughter a guitar for Christmas, so I guess I will probably end up learning chords and strumming patterns on that too!  I love music.

Re: Any musicians among us?

Flutes, piano, organ, gameboy (that's not a joke).

I learnt music in  musics schools, music conservatorys, university... And stopped my studies few years ago : "fuck off, I just want to play music because I like it, that's all".

I play jazz (modal, electric, or free), breton music, classical (well, I mean, baroque and contemporary music), and chipmusic.

I mostly play guitar. But, have dabbled in other fretted instruments Mandolin, Bouzouki. I also restore and build stringed instruments. Its a nice hobby. Keeps me off the streets. tongue

^ It just occurred to me that, while I've seen many homeless beggars and many buskers, to the best of my knowledge I've never seen any buskers that were homeless.  Interesting.

Re: Any musicians among us?

Vaguely strum an electric guitar, sometimes sort of sing.

My three guitar gods:

Jerry - the Creator
Carlos - the Preserver
Jimi - the Destroyer

but still haven't managed to play lead like any of them.

VastOne, Ripple's a favorite of mine, too... played it last week at a holiday party... not an Xmas song per se but nobody complained. smile

True story: The year I moved to San Francisco, I went to a show at the Fillmore. During a particularly awesome tune featuring Karl Perazzo and Tom Coster, I happened to look to my left, and Carlos was standing right next to me, enjoying the music! We just sort of gave each other a knowing little nod like groovy, man.

wish he had jumped on stage to jam (and invited me too), oh well...

Jimi and Jerry I never got the chance to see live. sad

Cool... I usually get asked at parties to play the piano at christmas time and never play any christmas songs...

It is always great have an 83 year old aunt ask me to play Cinderellas - Don't Know What You Got Til It's Gone over and over..  cool

John, incredibly well said..  Each with a unique sound and style..  I have failed epically in my pursuit as well... but have a damned good time trying...

I would only add David Gilmour to my list. His sounds, riffs and innovations are legendary and a bit underrated

^ Some may argue that there's a reason Pink Floyd didn't become big until after Syd left...same thing for Dire Straits and David, Train and Rob...yada...Syd in particular was really "out there".

I've tried to get into Floyd a few times but just can't get past the plodding arena-rock tempos. Would it kill ya to drink a cup of coffee before the gig, guys? smile

Re: Any musicians among us?

2 true stories about Floyd:

First time I heard them, a friend loaned me Delicate Sound of Thunder. I was a big Red Hot Chili Peppers fan at the time; you can imagine how boring a 9-minute version of "Comfortably Numb" sounded to me!

Flash forward to the '90s, a different friend said, "No, their 80s stuff is crap; you need to hear Dark Side of the Moon." So we turned out the lights, "cleansed the doors of perception," and pressed play... halfway through Side B, we got the phone call... a friend of ours had been killed in an accident, much too young... we looked at each other and decided she would want us to finish listening to the album... IIRC it ends with the sound of a heartbeat fading out.... I get chills thinking about it.

Needless to say I have never listened to DSotM since, and I usually excuse myself and leave the room if one of the songs comes on the radio. sad
