Weather Report Displayed

The panel Weather Plugin for Xfce4 has been very unreliable as of late..using .7.3.3.-1b
******* If anyone knows of a Fix for the Plugin please Post..Thank You *******
.....MeanWhile....
So I put a launcher in panel
Using Synaptic I installed weather-util to display weather report in a pop open terminal.
This done in Xfce4 but can be done anywhere using proper terminal name for the DE
Note that I changed the TitleBar and installed a Weather Icon with the Command.

This is a list of the various Weather Metar IDs to use in the ID parameter of the command below.
http://weather.rap.ucar.edu/surface/stations.txt

As you can see the weather-util part of the command breaks down to   "weather-util -c NYC -s NY -i KNYC"   quotes are important to digest the spaces.

xfce4-terminal -I "/usr/share/xfce4/weather/icons/liquid/30.png" --geometry 65x10 -T "Weather Report" -H -e "weather-util -c NYC -s NY -i KNYC"

If you want to call as a single script simply and save as an executable file as an example weather.sh
run as

./weather.sh
#!/bin/bash
xfce4-terminal -I "/usr/share/xfce4/weather/icons/liquid/30.png" --geometry 65x10 -T "Weather Report" -H -e "weather-util -c NYC -s NY -i KNYC"

Re: Weather Report Displayed

Just as a side note. The weather applet was broken in Xfce due to license issues with weather.com. It is now fixed in Testing/Unstable, I am not sure yet about Stable. Look at this thread: http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/topic … er-applet/.

ivanovnegro-

This utility is intended to provide quick access to current weather conditions and forecasts. Presently, it is capable of providing data for localities throughout the United States of America by retrieving and processing METAR data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and forecasts from the National Weather Service.

Re: Weather Report Displayed

Thank You for the posts.
Yeah, I took a look at that thread earlier. Seems I am having a the same No Data issue with the plugin.
The weather Plugin works pretty reliably in Wheezy but not with CrunchBang.
By Contrast while the Weatherplugin works well 90% of the time in Wheezy while it works the Response for the weather-util is
S-L-O-W.. as is Aweather app. Once working OK it is just the initial display.

Personally, as with Yourself, I would just as soon the panel weather-plugin worked, nice app.

Re: Weather Report Displayed

I'm running Debian sid xfce on one partition and Debian squeeze xfce on another.  I just checked my squeeze, or stable partition and the xfce weather isn't [still isn't] working.  wink

I've been using weather-util for most of this year, I'd reckon, ever since I heard pvsage talking about it in several threads.  Like to pop it up in terminal every so often as opposed to using zenity because I use undecorated terminal windows.

Nice work on that little zenity script, sqlpythonbig_smile

I just wish the forecast feature of weather-util would be fixed soon...for many of us, they've been broken since the Ides of March.

^ Still broken!?!  I've been playing with this again this afternoon and found out I can get as full a report as possible with just the -i command.

Re: Weather Report Displayed

Oh, I can get the detailed current conditions too; it's the forecasts that are broken.  There's a kludge fix, but it involves wading through a sea of METAR pages, and the resulting output needs some interpretation.

Re: Weather Report Displayed

Nice work on that little zenity script,

Thanks..but just kludged together with available utilities...One of the Nice features of the *nixes..
One of the niceties which make me wonder about Win users.. ???

Anyway, yeah,... seems to be broken mostly in Squeeze (weather-plugin xfce) but in my copy of Wheeze/Xfce4 works mostly..Just has the problem with acquiring the data..
Now regarding weather-util... works (except for Forcast switch as per pvsage)..

Further weather-util script pops right up in Squeeze but takes 12 seconds (as timed by Me) to pull in the data within Wheezy...

Well, the source is Python so perhaps I will take a look at it and see if there is an obvious Bug.
Dependencies are Python and Python-support.. don't see what else could be screwing up.

Re: Weather Report Displayed

Ok... Let me take that back..
I am in Squeeze now and Today I get an info delay with weather-util...

Just this from a command line

weather-util -i KNYC

Will get a delay and every ID I try is just as Slow.
Might be more the Service then the Code.

Re: Weather Report Displayed

I agree, it must be the way the new NOAA zone forecasts are set up for each area.  My terminal pops right up despite it having a df -h or something like this

christopher@1015PEM:~$ weather-util -s tx -c austin -i kedc -f
Current conditions at KEDC
Last updated Dec 19, 2011 - 06:35 PM EST / 2011.12.19 2335 UTC
   Temperature: 68 F (20 C)
   Relative Humidity: 88%
Wind: from the W (270 degrees) at 10 MPH (9 KT)
   Sky conditions: mostly cloudy
City Forecast for Austin, TX
Issued Monday afternoon - Dec 19, 2011
Monday night... Low 44, 50% chance of precipitation.
Tuesday... Sunny, high 59, 0% chance of precipitation.
Tuesday night... Low 32, 0% chance of precipitation.
   Wednesday... Partly cloudy, high 59.
   Wednesday night... Low 42.

EDIT -- just thinking out loud but do you think you could contact the local NOAA - NWS reporting station and ask if they had a fix for this.  I'm not saying this is an answer but locally we have a really active NWS Storm Spotter Program [free yearly training classes] with direct links to the local NWS office -- if there was something similar in NYC or any city for that matter perhaps it would give you an in you wouldn't otherwise have.  And on second thought...

Though I believe as you do it is the right direction.

Here we are at 11:pm EST and the interface I wrote is now returning info in a split second..

Re: Weather Report Displayed

Here is one for PVSAGE
I was able to get Forcast to work like so
..Pay notice to the fact that the Daily Report returned says Dec 19,2011
.>BUT
..the Forcast is datedd May 4, 2011
The info for the NOAA is held here.... http://weather.noaa.gov/pub/data/foreca … w_york.txt
And the latest info IS May 4, 2011.....  not being Updated..
WTF ?

So, that is why the -f Forcast switch doesn't work.

Re: Weather Report Displayed

I believe PVSAGE has already pointed out that you can get a hard to read forecast for the 5 days.
The line below will do it.. substitude your Ciy/State/zoneID

sqlpython@debian7:~$ weather  --forecast --verbose --furl=http://weather.noaa.gov/pub/data/forecasts/zone/ny/nyz075.txt -c "New York" -s NY -i KNYC

The authour of the app is at

I think I mentioned this in my previous post, including the link.  Incidentally, RDU was one of the locations that stopped updating the old forecast URIs back in March.

The developer claimed that he was working on a patch...of course, he's obviously working on Yuggoth time... tongue

Re: Weather Report Displayed

Right,  I did see that you had discovered same.... just putting it all in one post for reference.

I believe PVSAGE has already pointed out that you can get a hard to read forecast for the 5 days.

I used to believe that the NOAA put together and updated those txt files... hmmm guess not!
So, what does this mean?
Does the site keeping those txt forcast files need a new maintainer?
Right now I am in Wheezy Xfce4 and the Panel Weather-Plugin is chuggin along... Although after the Desktop appears I do have to his a Refresh on the app. A bit annoying but better the No Response with the app in Squeeze.
Same versions too... 7.3.3-1b
Also as with yesterday, my little script works instantaneously from about 11pm EST and with a 10 second delay during the Day Hours.. I can only attribute that to server traffic or poor server support.

Here is one more item that I noticed as I struck the Enter key for the post.
My local Report for Today 12/20/2011 Reports.... Clear Sky Conditions..
big_smile  It is completely OverCast here... LOL

I might as well make up my own Weather..
In fact I think I will write an app that has randomized pre-written Generic weather responses... ROTFL
Much like the old Toy of the past the Magic 8-Ball..

Re: Weather Report Displayed

^ Mattel still makes those.

Even with the 15-minute forecasts from Weather Channel, I frequently find the current conditions to be different from the current forecast.  For a while (a couple years ago), "30% chance of rain" meant several hours of a drizzle that was approximately 30% of a typical seasonal shower. roll

Re: Weather Report Displayed

This is a bit of an afterthought http://goodies.xfce.org/projects/panel- … her-plugin but there may be any number of people reading this thread that wouldn't think to look it up at xfce goodies.  Especially interesting for newcomers is this

The folks at weather.com have upgraded their platform in July 2009 to make the API key mandatory. It wasn't required previously (apart in writing), and the Weather plugin didn't implement that before 0.6.3. You'll need version 0.6.3 or more recent to make the Weather plugin work again.

The most current version is 0.7.4 (2011-02-02) according to that site.  fwiw.

I don't know when it began working again but xfce4-weather-plugin in Squeeze is operable -- it's version 0.7.3-3+squeeze1 if anyone is interested in using it.  smile
