Hey guys! I just have a quick question...
I have a few modules installed ("needed" for other programs) which I'd like to prevent from loading at boot. These include the various lirc modules and the ppdev modules. How would I go about doing this? I tried creating a new file called user-blacklist.conf in /etc/modprobe.d but it had absolutely no effect.
Thanks in advance!

Try editing /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf instead. You should have it already. Syntax is
blacklist modulename

Unfortunately, I tried that first before starting a whole new conf file and that didn't work either

The blacklist.conf should work. Perhaps something wrong with syntax or permissions or module names?

While using /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf is the preferred way of doing things, any file in that directory should work in theory, as long as you use the syntax
blacklist modulename
for example to blacklist my broadcom networking card I use
blacklist b43

Never mind...I figured out what the problem was. Some modules were still being loaded because they were needed by other modules which are not blacklisted. Marking thread solved. For posterity: Don't use blacklist.conf - it is not the preferred way of doing things (see xaos52's link). Use another file (like user-blacklist.conf) - it can be named anything as long as it ends with .conf. Also, make sure you blacklist everything which depends on that module - otherwise that module will be loaded!
