i like to change my desktop wallpaper monthly or seasonly, usually whatever fits me best at the moment. and this picture captures a lot of what i love about the summer. and i don't really do much with conky, i never really spent much time figuring it out so it is a pretty basic set-up. but besides that, yeah... this obviously isn't my work desktop wallpaper.
... so be it.

@sector, np. @Rooster, thanks! I'm running Compiz/Emerald stand alone actually, but since I have Xfce installed anyway I'm using Xfdesktop to give me a right-click menu and xfce4-panel. I guess it's only minimally different from just running compiz --replace from within an Xfce session, but it was more fun for me to do it this way as I had to figure out things like how to get my keyboard volume keys to work and how to create keybindings to logout/reboot/shutdown. I'm very happy with the results, I had forgotten how well Compiz's "Smart" window placement works (-edit- and I've managed to get gtk2-module-rgba working to provide transparency again).

Are you using GTK3? If so, how did you get a global menu and what panel is it?

I would have enjoyed giving you a screenshot of a nice, clean polished desktop, sadly, just a few days ago my fellow CB forums member 'MYK' physically hijacked my laptop and i have little choice but to show u the result before i start cleaning up the mess
does anyone even know who the man is on the background? oh and that shooping was probably instigated by my brother.
you can find the conky script (before its unfortunate custom edit) at deviantart with loads of great resources, many provided by some of crunchies forum regulars, check it out!
running openbox these days, dropped tint2 in favour of docky, running terminator on the background, using xterm for general duties.
thanks again myk, you $%&@ *^#~£><!

Every time I see that image, I want to quote Jonathan in "Life Serial": "Thermal exhaust port's *above* the main port." OK, I feel better now. Cool wall!

As a deeply patriotic American, here's what I've done to celebrate the 4th of July on my #! Xfce installation:
Here's where you can find everything I used (none of which were created by me, though):
Wallpaper: http://nextread.co.uk/blog/wp-content/u … enpigg.jpg (found on Google Images)
GTK theme: http://xfce-look.org/content/show.php/G … ent=128984 (multiple color variations available, I used the dark blue version)
Icons: http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/ … tent=84890
Compiz/Emerald theme: http://beryl-themes.org/content/show.ph … ent=116977 (I heavily modified this theme to make it red, white, and blue and even have a few settings in there, such as the active opacity, for example, set to 76%)
To complete the patriotic experience, I also have my screensaver set to "Pyro" (yup, that fireworks one).
And now, it's off to the shower and then over to our best friends' place to spend the 4th with them and splash around in the pool with their kids -- that is, if the weather cooperates, because mother nature may have a fireworks show of her own in mind later today, if y'all know what I mean...

^ Mother Nature's light shows are pwn sauce for fireworks. I'm not quite as patriotic as you, but that is a pretty set of themes you have there.

machinebacon: That's the first time i've seen "wikipedia2text" is it browsable? or do you just pre-configure it?
omns: Use what works for you, I can't use Unity/Gnome Shell because they require 3d acceleration (which I think is stupid and unnecessary). Openbox and XFCE both work pretty well for me.
Makkun: can I have your conky config?
mati75: Which program are you using to display the photo?
fredbird67: All out! I like it! No celebrations of American Independence day here in Japan...
kolreoptero: How did you get the systray icons and the task switcher icons to be the same size? I've not been able to accomplish that with lxpanel.
servingwater: Nice Japanese tea ceremony tribute with the wallpaper. I wouldn't immediately associate the color with those props though, so it was kind of mental shock when I realized what they were... I like it though.
一期一会 Let it be good.
