[Why drive when you can FLY?] Liquorix/Zen Kernel

Version 2.6.36-2 of the Liquorix/Zen Kernel should now be available from the Statler repository.

Anyone wishing to try the kernel can install it with the follow command:

32 bit:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install linux-image-2.6-liquorix-686

64 bit:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install linux-image-2.6-liquorix-amd64

Also, a new section has been added to the 'cb-welcome' script and starting from the next release, users will be offered the chance to install this alternative kernel on first boot.

Note: offering this kernel from the Statler repository is only possible due to the Liquorix Project. If you appreciate this and want to show your thanks, please consider making a donation from the project's homepage.

Ah, I like that it's an optional install. Nice one again big_smile

It seems to be a popular mod, so I thought I should try to make it as easy to install as possible, but not make it default. smile

Re: [Why drive when you can FLY?] Liquorix/Zen Kernel

Liquorix does seem to be a great kernel!  On my netbook it crashes with a screenful of garbage if I try to do something stupid like load a Youtube video when I already have MoCP running, but other than that...

Thanks for making it easier to get in Statler.  It never was that hard to get, but it looks like it's a great option for a lot of us here, so it's good to have it just a little closer to hand.

@sectionsix (@pvsage, I always say that cuz your avatar looks like the dude on Ghost in the Shell) Yeah, it's great stuff.  Just having it withought having to touch sources.list/d and apt-key add.  It runs great on my IBM but, the netbook stuff seems like it could be more specific.  You runnin an EEE?

This is a very nice change for Statler. How many distros offer such an alternate kernel in their repos?

What exactly would be the advantage of the newer kernel?

Re: [Why drive when you can FLY?] Liquorix/Zen Kernel

So liquorix is some sort of prebuild zen kernel? On the one hand, I find the lack of documentation on the liquorix site disturbing, on the other hand: When using a patched kernel, you should make sure you know how to read configs.

Re: [Why drive when you can FLY?] Liquorix/Zen Kernel

Sound amazingly kool and very much a great service... But unfortunately I have no idea - because I have no idea about what Liquorix actually is / does?

So what exactly is the benifit with Liquorix? I've seen this kernel mentioned with subnotes (acer one and eee) but I have not found any really usefull explanation?

Very true.

As far as I know, documentation for the Zen kernel is contained with the changelogs. I figure this is due to the amount of patches applied and the frequency of builds. If anyone is interested to know more, I would suggest taking a look at: http://zen-kernel.org/documentation smile

Re: [Why drive when you can FLY?] Liquorix/Zen Kernel

I install the Liquorix kernel around 20 minutes ago and I find it now my system boot in ~75 seconds (before was 60 seconds) but Icewasel now is more fast and responsive, especially viewing some youtube videos big_smile

For me is ok, many thanks Philip !!!

Edit: maybe this is the best explanation for trying the new kernel:

I've considered using this before but can I use it in place of the Nvidia kernel that I currently use? Or are they different things?

@Awebb:  Actually he's DethKlok's manager and CFO - name's Charles Foster Offdensen.

@Rooster:  Nope, I rock a Dell Mini 9.  And - this is freaky - although I'm a big fan of GitS-SAC, it's been ages since I've seen the original movie...and I added both the movie and sequel to my Netflix queue earlier this week. yikes

Liquorix is a modified Linux kernel. Nothing to do with NVIDIA.

Sorry for the slight hijack but...what's this that I installed in order to get my Nvidia card working?

http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/topic … r-squeeze/

Am I right in thinking it's just an addition to the standard Linux kernel?

I suppose my original question should have been: can I use the Nvidia addon with the Liquorix kernel?

(Hmmm, a quick search shows that people have had problems using the 2. Aw, well.)

That is the non-free nvidia driver, and I use it together with the liquorix kernel on my machine, no issues so far.

So... zen /liquorix Kernel isn't made for/adding anything to laptops? "Desktop" was the only word I could understand...the rest was just "Greek" to me smile

Hmm...the quotation marks on Greek didn't play the role I was hopping to...bad thinking... I'm a native Greek, usually struggling to write in English so I really must thank you for your kind parenthesis. I got completely lost at bfs/csf part and mainly because that this description doesn't say much, I got the feeling that I didn't understand anything about zen, hence the "Greek to me". But now that I re-read it, except the bsf/csf part which is Chinese to me (this is the Greek version), the rest just isn't that informative.

So the question remains: Is this Kernel pointless in a laptop?

Re: [Why drive when you can FLY?] Liquorix/Zen Kernel

As far as I'm aware, "desktop" in this instance means anything that's not used as a server. Install it anyway, it'll show up in grub. If it doesn't work, boot into your old kernel (also shown in grub) and uninstall. Report back with your findings.

At the end of the day, as long as you've backed up your personal information, the worst that can happen is you need to reinstall.  big_smile
