I never liked laptops much but have been thinking about getting one lately. Mostly the keyboard is what bothers me so a full-sized (or close) keyboard is important... ergonomics > performance.

What good/bad/ugly experiences have y'all had with #! and laptops?

Are any brands particularly good for linux?

Came for the Debian, repos and packages... stayed for the OpenBox and grey.

Always liked Ubuntu and never had problems with it. Playing with Raspbian recently put me in the mood for the more of the same on performance hw.

I work on Windows and .NET all day, and wanted a platform where I could explore some things where the "wintel" way is a secondary consideration. I've been finding that more and more of the computer science I read is based on linux and java... not usually a big problem but I want to be more than a tourist in linuxland.

LOL. That's golden smile Sergio Leone always praised his acting range, "he has two expressions: hat on, hat off."

Also, is your avatar Batou?

wow, i don't know half of what you described there... to me erlang is still a town in germany - well that's erlangen but still.

I also don't know half of what I described there! LOL.

Erlang is a language for "concurrent programming." It's very weird, but very good at certain things. I still feel like a noob programmer even though I've done it off-and-on for my whole life. Exploring "weird" languages can be very helpful.

It's not booting well. I think this newfangled UEFI BIOS is giving me trouble, but I can't quite pin it down.

After GRUB is finished and I about 30s after the "Loading...." screen appears, I get an error something like "ata8:00: state: { DRDY }" and then the system hangs. Sorry, at work so I don't have the exact details.

It's a nice shiny new Asus M5A99FX Pro R2.0 with a nice shiny new Samsung SSD and some used HDDs. In another day or two I'mma get real frustrated and breakdown and cry then try a different motherboard!

When it runs, eveything is lovely!

Howdy. Linux\Crunchbang noob here. Really liking Crunchbang so far, but having trouble setting up new system... just doesn't want to boot :-\

I'm mostly interested in software development, NoSql databases, data science, natural language processing and when I'm not so motivated... genre movies and maybe even the occassional video game. I'd like to learn me some Erlang and run me a #! on a Parallela.
