I have my Crunchbang laptop on my home network.  My Win 8.1 box sees the Crunchbang laptop and conversely my Crunchbang laptop sees my Win 8.1 box in their respective file managers.  When I try to connect from either end I get nowhere.  Windows says I don't have the proper password and username (Network Credentials).  Crunchbang says I do not have the proper password for the windows PC.  Samba is installed and I am able to use my network printer to print from Crunchbang  I have never sorted out the shares issue.  I have a credentials problem.  I am not sure what I am supposed to tell windows and conversely Crunchbang.

Obviously I have messed something up with respect to passwords and usernames.  Troubleshooting the problem Windows is telling me that Crunchbang won't accept the connection.  Any tips on how to sort this out?

#3 Re: Help & Support (Testing/Unstable) » VLC does Not Play Audio » 2014-10-28 05:05:53

I was not skilled enough to determine what plugins I was dealing with therefore I could not delete them. It has would be a guessing game which is a waste of everyone's time. I installed Smplayer which does the job for me. I completely removed VLC.  Therefore I will request that the thread be closed.

Thanks for the effort

I didn't know I had custom plugins. I'll look for them.

Thank you one and all for your help.

lb I checked Pavucontrol and all is good. Ohnonot you are likely on to something. I did a debug log for a few minutes and I generated this text file.  This is not code so I hope I don't offend the protocol.  BTW Code1 thanks foe the audio app recommendation. Do you have one for video? Damo I appreciate the comment.  I don't have to use VLC but I hate broken stuff!

I don't know how it got there but multimedia systems selector had something to do with Gstreamer which I have removed.  In Vlc under Tools - Statistics it shows no ouptut packets being written.  It does show packets being read. BTW I installed Clementine to play my mp3 and it works great. I looked at track synchronization and it shows this dump. No audio dump apparently.

Hello (I am adding code blocks as requested)
I did as you asked and ran VLC from the command line. The GUI popped up and I executed the "play" command on a wav file called "Mac OS 9 - Boot.wav". As you can see I got the error output indicated.

william@crunchbang:~/music$ vlc

VLC media player 2.0.3 Twoflower (revision 2.0.2-93-g77aa89e)
[0x9365600] dbus interface: listening on dbus as: org.mpris.MediaPlayer2.vlc

[i][0x992cad0] equalizer audio filter error: rate not supported
[0x95f6208] main audio output error: cannot add user filter equalizer (skipped)

This is a very small file. I ran VLC and played an mp3 file and i got a huge data dump. I tried again and I got no response at all from the mp3 file which was about 3mb in size.

Playing an mp4 file got me video but no audio. This computer is not suitable for video so I only played the mp4 to verify lack of audio.

[0x985c678] avcodec decoder error: more than 5 seconds of late video -> dropping frame (computer too slow ?)
[0x985c678] avcodec decoder error: more than 5 seconds of late video -> dropping frame (computer too slow ?)

Again this all I know at this point.  Sorry about the code blocks!

Thank You! I assumed incorrectly that aplay used Pulse Audio.  I would like recommendations as to how to find the problem.  I don't know if removing pulse would solve anything. I have both removed and re-installed VLC to no avail. I opened Multimedia Systems selector and the SOUND test passed.

In VLC I noticed that there is no audio device (grayed out). In preferences Pulse audio is selected.
Alsa is offered as an alternative. neither work!

For some reason VLC does not play audio. Pulse seems fine as the aplay command works.  Any suggestions?

I recently noticed I have no audio in VLC.  Aplay in terminal works for sample wavefiles.  Video works. Volume control works too.  I uninstalled  VLC completely and reinstall with no success.

damo Thanks !   Ran the cmd you presented.  Gnome session was at top(auto) of list and openbox at the bottom. Selected Openbox, rebooted and all is well.  You can close this thread.

I can logout from the XFCE desktop and log back in to Openbox via the Waldorf screen (F1 shows it to be Openbox) . How to I change Openbox to be the preferred desktop session as it use to be.

How to I add an item in the XFCE session menu (GADMIN Samba) to the Open box menu.  Gadmin Samba has no menu option listed in openbox. I like the GUI in Gadmin Samba

#15 Re: Help & Support (Crunchbang 11 "Waldorf") » Desktop Changed » 2014-10-12 08:17:06

It just occurred to me that if web pages render and video works then the video card should not be the problem. Is that a reas hmm onable assumption?  8o

#16 Re: Help & Support (Crunchbang 11 "Waldorf") » Desktop Changed » 2014-10-12 08:10:11

Thank you
Unfortunately  neither of these cmds worked.  Running the first(openbox --restart) changed nothing.  Using the cmd line Help file I tried a restart and a reconfigure.  On reconfigure I got a message concerning a display environmental variable but no result.  I then ran the (sudo service slim restart).  At the tty1 prompt I logged in and I got a Copyright message. The only way out of that window was a hard shutdown.  Rebooting took me back to the minimal interface which displayed drop downs across the top and 4 icons in this order:
APPLICATIONS       PLACES       DATE        BATTERY ICON    SKR ICON    WIFI Signal ICON     Clipboard    MY Name(Shutdown Options)

I can live with this but I hope I don't have too:

I didn't have the terminology correct.  The basic desktop is what I have presently.  The menus are on top, so that must be the basic.  How do I restart the Openbox session manually.  Hopefully it would restart normally in the future,

I booted up Crunchbang recently and I got a message about a video card issue. I am not sure what that meant but the OS booted into the basic desktop.  While usable I like the original (Conky) desktop ( Is that the Gnome or Slim desktop?). This happened once before and I was able to get back to the Conky desktop but I don't recall how.

Unrelated I noticed that the GADMIN Samba GUI is in the apps menu of the basic desktop but is not in the original desktop.  How do I fix that once I get my Conky back?

Thanks

I switched to digital ouput in the pavucontrol preferences and it didn't make any difference.  That just silenced the onboard analog. I may be dealing with old hardware that can't output pcm. This a vintage Dell inspiron 600m from 2004.

I have a Behringer USB dac that I moved from a windows pc to my Linux laptop to see if it would work in Linux (Behringer says it will) but it is silent. No drivers are supposed to be required in any OS. No noise or anything just silence!  Suggestions?

I thought I would reflect on my Crunchbang experience. I would have to say it has been great!  I had to find a new OS after the official death of XP. This old Dell 600m Inspiron was virtually useless with XP. Ten minute boots  and 15 minute updates and all. It was so onerous that I only booted it up once a week on Sunday morning and let it trudge on while I ate breakfast.  No casual use at all! Now with speedy boots under a minute I actually use the laptop daily!

I had to learn more about Linux as it is not for the casual user.  That's a good thing!  I cycled through several distros before I found one as stable as Crunchbang.

Unresolved I haven't yet figured out how to network it with my Win 8.1 PC or to get shares to work.  Dropbox saved the day. I hope to get the intellectual satisfaction of communicating across my wireless network someday. Also I never could get a shutdown wave to work in CB-exit.  To bad there is no app for that. But that's not critical, just a fun thing. I use this laptop as a backup unit so I am quite happy.

Thanks for our effort!  smile

I'm not sure what you mean by #1 installed. My laptop is running crunchbang if that is what you mean.  The phone runs Android.

I will check out the 4G forums and advise.

I want to root my retired Motorola Atrix4G (MB860) and experiment with it as a min tablet on WIFI.  I am having trouble finding software that works in Crucnchbang.  Is there a simple package that I can install and one that is simply enough for a newbie to get working. smile

It seems any package that I try to install that uses jre7 or jre6 fails with the error below: sad

E: oracle-java7-installer: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1
E: oracle-jdk7-installer: dependency problems - leaving unconfigured

I cannot install or uninstall java by itself either. I have tried Synaptic complete removal, command line uninstalls. It makes no difference. What next? Reinstall Crucnhbang?
