#1 Re: WM/DE Talk » Openbox Dock, with lal clock, trayer system tray - Workspace Switcher? » 2013-01-11 10:26:16

I've ended up configuring Tint2 to workspace switch between six desktops & carry the clock & tray (with the volti sound mixer - volume control in it), it sits in the title / menu bar in the right hand side, over next to the minimise | expand | close gadgets. I got it to sit there by setting it to use the Openbox dock.

The use of which basically allows you to put Tint2 anywhere you want on your desktop & on top of windows if you so choose (as I have).

So I'm happy. smile

Hopefully someone else will benefit from this little adventure... wink

Thanks for your reply PackRat.

Through it, I found some pagers to try. Unfortunately the only one that I can position over windows, menu bars & such is netwmpager. It would/will do me fine if I can find a way to get it to allow me to change desktops by selecting them with the mouse & left button clicking.

As it stands I can do that ONLY if the desktop has not a window (of any size) on it. I've tried clicking on the desktop space beside the tiny Gcolor2 window I had open, in the pager, & it still won't accept the input!?

There is nothing in the netwmpager config file that has anything to do with this (to my eyes anyway) so its got me stumped.

I've got the Ob dock working nicely with lal, & trayer, but now the problem is how do I add a workspace switcher?

Does anyone know if this is even possible?

If there is a dockable workspace switcher that surely would be nice... smile

I found (roughly) this command somewhere on the web & modified it to suit my needs & run it from the ~/.config/openbox/autostart file:

(sleep 2s && trayer --expand true --transparent true --alpha 185 --edge top --align right --expand true --SetDockType true --widthtype request --margin 510) &

For the lal clock you need to create a file called ~/.Xdefaults & put the following, modified to suit you in it:

! lal clock --------------------------------------------------------- ---------

lal*font: Mono
lal*fontsize: 29
lal*bold: true
lal*color: #cccccc # I used GColor2 to match a
# colour on my desktop & give me its hex name
lal*width: 350 # Here you set the width to
# suit your style of clock
lal*format: %a %d %b %T # This is where you
# configure your clock type

The file isn't a bash script so if you use the above removing all of the commented # lines is probably a good idea. wink

man lal gave me enough to get what I needed.

I start lal using lal & in ~/.config/openbox/autostart

If I can get a workspace switcher to work in this configuration it would make me VERY happy. smile

Note: For anyone who is interested in trying this setup out, I'm using a 24" monitor running 1920x1200 res' so the font sizes & the positioning of the trayer tray will need to be adjusted to suit your display.

Thanks for finding that Sector11, I'll enjoy reading it again.

You could print it out if you don't like reading it on the screen. I always enlarge the display of .pdf or whatever else to make it as easy as possible on my eyes.

#5 Re: Off Topic / General Chat » Everything is On Topic Here » 2012-01-30 01:36:14

If you are only knee high to a grasshopper your lower centre of gravity may be helpful...

At least your furry little toes wouldn't get cold.

I read a great book back in the 70's called "Bored of the Rings" by the Harvard Lampoon. It started out brilliantly but they couldn't keep that standard for the whole book. Which was probably about a 300 page standard paperback.

If you search for it you'd likely find it 2nd hand at Amazon. Well worth a read.

Never saw that site before, I found by: Google "Hobbit" > Image - it's the second one. Clicked on more sizes and ended up here:

mrpeachy, now that you have a configuration file, could you make a separate GUI that allows the user to input the variables that suit them & creates/modifies the config file?

smile

You do love playing with languages mrpeachy. smile  (& mathematics I suspect...)

#11 Re: Tips, Tricks & Scripts » weather in conky (LUA scripts) updated 12/26/13! » 2012-01-12 07:12:05

This is not weather related so please tell me to take it elsewhere if it is inappropriate?

I just noticed that whilst using a torrent & having (at the time of this writing) downloaded well over 4GB of data, my conky says Total Down: 65.9MiB (& counting, so it is alive).

This is the line from the conkyrc:

Total Down: ${alignr}${totaldown eth0}

Does anyone have any ideas about that?

[edit:] I just had an ah ha experience. Which makes me feel somewhat embarrassed.

I'm using a torrent slave, so what is being counted on this machine has little (if anything) to do with that 4+GB that has been downloaded.

Sorry to have wasted your time, though by the time you get to reading this it may just be worth it for the chuckle... wink

#12 Re: Tips, Tricks & Scripts » weather in conky (LUA scripts) updated 12/26/13! » 2012-01-09 23:20:41

mrpeachy; I turn my back for 3 or 4 days & look what you do!!!

Busy, busy, busy. smile

I expect you are going to add the great lessons above to your blog?

I'll let my brain recover from my days in the big city for as long as it needs before I go head down bum up into this new world of Lua - weather.

Again, an enormous thank you for your contribution to the community mrpeachy.

#13 Re: Tips, Tricks & Scripts » weather in conky (LUA scripts) updated 12/26/13! » 2012-01-05 01:43:56

I'm going to be away for the next 4 days, I look forward to trying out the new version then mrpeachy.

By then Sector11 will have meticulously uncovered any bugs that he can... smile

I think you are just picky Sector11! wink

#14 Re: Tips, Tricks & Scripts » weather in conky (LUA scripts) updated 12/26/13! » 2012-01-02 01:26:19

I'll give it a go later on today & see how far I get this time... lol

At a glance with my slow mind, it looks like it will be easy to customise fonts/size & which possibilities you want to use out of all the options, including the weather fonts.

It looks like it will be fun to play with mrpeachy. smile

[edit:]
Can you post a link to the code please mrpeachy?

Or tell me how I should search it out?

Thanks.

Oops, I just thought that perhaps it isn't ready yet... smile

#15 Re: Tips, Tricks & Scripts » weather in conky (LUA scripts) updated 12/26/13! » 2012-01-01 08:41:39

@ mr.P: I read that guys were having trouble with curl, weather & conky on the Arch forum:

Can I suggest using --connect-timeout 30 ?

Every now and then the curl connection will hang, which results in conky not updating. If I kill the curl process, conky updates right away.

I don't know if that will be of any use to you or not?

& thanks for your last paragraph above. I was starting to feel pretty useless the way things had been going today.

Tomorrow will hopefully be a better one. wink

#16 Re: Tips, Tricks & Scripts » weather in conky (LUA scripts) updated 12/26/13! » 2012-01-01 05:30:06

I downgraded to the 64bit kernel 3.1.5-1-ARCH & now the rebooting problems are gone & the previous version of forecast.7.lua is working fine.

Todays version is not though.

It can't connect to the internet & bring in the intelli-weather.txt it tries for a short while & then dissapears leaving some white speckles across the bottom of the screen for the same width as its display.

The .lua file is very hard to kill.

My brain if tired & fried, I'll stay away from this until tomorrow.

#17 Re: Tips, Tricks & Scripts » weather in conky (LUA scripts) updated 12/26/13! » 2012-01-01 05:01:11

I been doing reboots with no conky & I'm getting failures to connect to the net sometimes as well.

I installed a new kernel today, it really wouldn't surprise me if it is responsible for this internet problem.

I'll downgrade & see what that brings.

#18 Re: Tips, Tricks & Scripts » weather in conky (LUA scripts) updated 12/26/13! » 2012-01-01 04:54:01

I'm having the internet problem now with any version of conky weather or not!

So perhaps if you hadn't already you should take my above post with a grain of salt.

I'm too tired to start checking logs & things to try to work out what the hell is going on on this machine.  I'll get to it later.

Sorry for wasting your time.

#19 Re: Tips, Tricks & Scripts » weather in conky (LUA scripts) updated 12/26/13! » 2012-01-01 04:22:33

Things aren't going so smoothly now:

I rebooted my machine with just the forecast.8.conky set to autostart in openbox. I couldn't connect to the internet?

I tried two boots same result.

So I removed forecast.8.conky from the autostart & it started fine with internet functioning fine.

Then I started it via the terminal & got a never ending flow of errors. It couldn't use the internet to get the intelli-weather.txt info'.

& it was impossible to kill via htop. To the point that it would crash htop in trying.

In the terminal these errors:

I just spotted it when reviewing what I wrote to you after it was posted.

In the lua section of the conkyrc I was calling the previous version of the lua . <doh!>

I'll start cleaning up the mess.

#21 Re: Tips, Tricks & Scripts » weather in conky (LUA scripts) updated 12/26/13! » 2012-01-01 03:40:49

Yes I have killed & restarted multiple times.

I just noticed this one, which I don't think I need:

lua_load ~/Conky/LUA/draw_bg.lua

############################################## End Miscellaneous Section ###
### LUA Settings ###########################################################
## lua_load ~/Conky/LUA/draw_bg.lua

## ${lua conky_draw_bg 10 0 0 0 0 0x000000 0.4}
## ${lua conky_draw_bg corner_radius x_position y_position width height color alpha}
####################################################### End LUA Settings ###

# The all important - How often conky refreshes.
# If you have a "Crey" try: 0.2 - smokin' - but watch the CPU useage go UP!
update_interval 1
top_name_width 7

lua_load ~/conky/lua/forecast.7.lua
lua_draw_hook_pre weatherdata #starts the lua weather data gathering function, call once at top of conkyrc

## following line needed for forecast.8.lua <<<<<<<--------------
template1 /home/handy/conky/intelli-weather.txt

TEXT

I have a conkyrc which is just system stuff, no weather. I hadn't stopped that one to test, I'll do it now.

I'm only running the weather script that you most recently linked to in this thread.
__________

I just stopped them both & restarted only the weather.lua conky & I still have the problem.

It is always possible that I have done something dumb, but of course I don't know what it may be.

#22 Re: Tips, Tricks & Scripts » weather in conky (LUA scripts) updated 12/26/13! » 2012-01-01 03:06:37

I deleted that line but it just gave me a different one on restarting.

I searched for "weather.txt" in both the conky & the .lua & made sure that my path was right, which is:

/home/handy/conky/intelli-weather.txt

As intelli-weather.txt is the name that the file creates for itself here.

I have deleted the intelli-weather.txt file (more than once) & restarted but I still get the first string in the file printed across the top of the screen?

#23 Re: Tips, Tricks & Scripts » weather in conky (LUA scripts) updated 12/26/13! » 2012-01-01 02:16:45

mrpeachy I'm running your new script. I haven't edited "--the end of timed section" as yet.

I get the following line of characters across the top of the forecast.8.conky on screen (as in not windowed) display:

Clear|25|25|25|Unl|25|6|11|8|80|E|41|30|<>Sunday|January

Apart from that I haven't noticed any problems in the few minutes that it has been running. wink

[edit:] I just did the --end of timed section edits.

Your note at the bottom of the .lua script says that the previous line number that needs to be commented out is 362, it is actually 357.

That's about the limit of my ability to find bugs in your code mr.P. smile

#24 Re: Tips, Tricks & Scripts » weather in conky (LUA scripts) updated 12/26/13! » 2012-01-01 00:49:09

Hi mrpeachy, what you are doing really looks great!

Something that occurred to me, (I'm no programmer, though I did teach myself a language around 20 years ago & intently work on my own small project for 6 months before it drove me mad! lol I've done next to nothing since then.)

can in your template, you use just one day that is then used for as many iterations of days afterward?

It would make the Lua so much easier to manipulate;- the number of days & the way it is displayed.

What I've just said is just as likely what you are doing & its gone over my head anyway. lol

Either way & anyway, great stuff.

[edit:] I haven't looked at your just posted script yet. We were cross posting again. smile

#25 Re: Tips, Tricks & Scripts » weather in conky (LUA scripts) updated 12/26/13! » 2011-12-31 11:36:46

mrpeachy, you do keep yourself busy. smile

It sounds like you have made a kind of a break through by what you wrote. It will be very interesting to see what you come up with.

I look forward to the next release. big_smile
