intltool "too old" even after update

I have been attempting to compile my very first program (running Statler, by the way). So far, not so good.

After unarchiving inkscape-0.48.0, I went on to type "./configure" only to be told:

error: Your intltool is too old. You need intltool 0.22 or later.

So I went into Synaptic Package Manager and installed 35.0+...

However I get the same error. Apparently I still don't have even intltool 0.22. Any tips for a noob?

Re: intltool "too old" even after update

I would recommend:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install inkscape

(or use Synaptic Package Manager if you prefer a GUI)

This will install inkscape 0.47 from the Debian repositories.

Re: intltool "too old" even after update

Thank you, snowpine. It is nice to know that some people know what they are doing! And pvsage, I was under the impression that 0.41.1-1... was "testing" but after some reading I guess that is Squeeze is testing and that I shouldn't be so afraid of that word! Thank you both for your input.

Is compiling stuff myself (and figuring out these sorts of little errors) stuff that I should still be doing myself for educational purposes? Or is that... you know, hopeless?

Nope, this is exactly the way to go. Just make sure you get familiar with apt-get and dpkg, so you canresolve dependencies without googling for hours.

Good advice. I wish I'd known that five hours ago.

P.S. I'm a Cyborg is a great movie, Awebb. Unless your icon is not from that movie...

Re: intltool "too old" even after update

If you need to compile the latest inkscape they have extensive and detailed instructions for Debian: http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/CompilingDebian

But if 0.47 is fine for your needs, in my opinion it is always easiest to install the tested and supported version from the Debian repositories.

It looks like you can also grab 0.48 from the Debian Experimental repo but I have not tested this myself. smile
