Before I begin, a big fat THANK YOU to corenominal and everyone on the forums who has been helpful. Virtually every issue I've had has been resolved and I'm 95% done with perfecting my CrunchBang install.
Only one more issue to go!
I cannot get applications to start up when the system boots (I have a USB live install, created via directions on Pendrivelinux.com)
I edit the ~/.config/openbox/autostart.sh file as superuser and make a few changes (such as mapping the keys to US format, adding a few applications such as xpad, etc.) and these changes are not retained upon reboot.
I had similar issues with the time/date and openbox menu, which were resolved in this thread: http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/post/6739/#p6739
However, I can't seem to figure out why I'm still having a similar problem with the autostart.sh. Perhaps the Live CD install is overwriting the autostart.sh each time?
Thanks again everybody for your help, looking forward to getting this (hopefully) last issue resolved!

Hello SpamWeasel
I believe the same issue which was effecting your menu.xml file is probably responsible for the autostart.sh issues. Please check to see if the file exists at /usr/share/CrunchBang/openbox/autostart.sh - if it does, edit this file instead of the autostart.sh at ~/.config/openbox/autostart.sh.
Hope this helps.

Resolved. I edited the file you pointed me to and it is now retaining my changes. I believe that I am all set now, you have been fantastically helpful. I look forward to using my "completed" install but of course will pop in as I have other questions
