Is pidgin rolled into the standard #! distro? I can't remember (I'm on lite right now).
Anyway, if the usual apt-get upgrade doesn't get you the latest version you might try adding the ubuntu karmic packages and doing
sudo apt-get update;
sudo apt-get install pidgin;
If it asks you to install a whole bunch of new libraries/other packages you should be a little wary - #! (if you're using 9.04) lives on the jaunty repositories and it might not like your replacing a bunch of libraries it uses. Also be sure not to apt-get upgrade your whole system for the same reason. Once you've done your install, deactivate the karmic repositories and update the package list again.
If you need some help managing your repositories have a look here

.... and of course a bunch of other people have much better solutions before I finish writing my post.
@adrian
right click (or windows-space) for the main menu and go system->package manager
-- edit --
oops, that's synaptic. windows-u gets you the update manager which is also
system-update --upgrade
from the terminal

@adrianpenguin - #! doesn't have the update manager, instead you should open Synaptic (Openbox menu > System > Package Manager), click the reload button, then check for upgrades.
