My system can play sound (the glitter sound at the login screen) and anything that inherits sound settings from the system can play sound (like firefox), but nothing else can.
VLC and Mplayer play video but do not play audio.
Rhythmbox and banshee don't play audio.
Amarok doesn't play audio, but it gives me an error on startup: "xine was unable to initialize any audio drivers"
When I attempt to open some porn up in mplayer, i get this: http://crunchbang.pastebin.com/m1cf4e10b
The same porn in vlc, I get this:
http://crunchbang.pastebin.com/m4ebf44a (it hangs after the last line)
On startup, banshee gives me this: http://crunchbang.pastebin.com/m190b988f
Any ideas?

Hmm interesting. In the preferences for each application, what is listed as the audio output type? Also, when did the problem first occur, can you remember any changes/package installations previous to the sound not working?

Have you tried forcing alsa to restart?
sudo alsa force-reloadAll in an effort to learn...

All were set to ALSA. I restarted several times to no avail. Eventually I decided I would just reinstall (haha, i know, i'm lazy). First though, just for fun and to see if it would fix it
cd ~/
sudo rm -r *
Then I rebooted and sound worked. No clue.
