Hi all
Ive been gone for a while, busy with school, but this morning i ran an update. Just now i was trying to rip some cd's that ive dug out.
At first i couldn't get any response at all. The cd rom spins up, but neither rythmbox nor pc man displayes any note that there is a cd inserted.
I installed thunar to see if it was some problem with pcman, but still no dice.
I noticed that there was an error in the term saying that totem was not installed, so some more apt-get and i have totem installed. I insert the cd again and thunar or totem tries to auto play but fails and says "no reason."
However now rythembox lists the cd in its devices section (still not listed in thunar or pc man). i am now ripping the cd, but its moving painfully slow.
Is there any way to get the cd to show up in the file manager? Could this be caused by me not keeping up with the updates? Whats going on?
Thanks for any advice anyone can give.

I'll take a poke at it; did the update include a kernel fix? If so, reboot, load that kernel and test again.

The CD won't show in your file manager unless it has data written to it. And if its an audio cd (not mp3) then it also won't show.

Sorry if i sound kind of ignorant, but im still a linux noob
How do i check if there was a kernel fix? I checked the var log for apt and it doesn't seem like there was any kernel stuff. but im probly just missing it.
When i boot there are only two kernel options the generic and the safe/recovery option.
also do you mean that i should go back to the kernel before the fix, or that i haven't yet started using the fix, and need to do so?
I did some googling and came found this thread http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1185574.
I checked and indeed this is the kernel that i am currently using.
Sorry to be a pest, and thankyou very much for your response.

Im still a bit confused.
The audio cd won't show in the file manager, Rhythmbox wont auto mount it.
It appears that the only way to gain access to the cd is to have thunar try to autoplay the cd through totem and fail, bc it's not a video, and then it will appear in rhythmbox.
Is there a better way to do this? or a better music player for cd's?
Hope this is not getting too off topic

Audio CDs don't show in the file manager because they have no filesystem.
BTW have you tried playing the CD in VLC?

I havent tried vlc, only because i can play it through rhythmbox. It just seems like a long walk around to listen or rip a cd into my library.
I have no way to find the cd, until totem tries to auto play through thunar.
Or do you mean that i could use vlc to do the same thing that totem is doing?

ps im trying vlc right now

Yes I meant try to play the CD in VLC first.

hey everyone
I tried vlc, and while the cd does play, it doent make it show up in rhythmbox. I have tried a few other cds, and am realizing that the problem is probably something to do with rhythmbox rather than with the file manager. Im no longer at my computer, so further investigation will have to wait until the morning.
Thanks to everyone. Things breaking like this has been a great learning experience for me due mostly to the excellent community here on the forums.
