Hi all!
Installed crunchbang for the first time just a couple of weeks ago, and though I've already reinstalled it once and I've not really gotten beyond tinkering with the different conky settings, menu-editing, customizing appearance (fonts and stuff) I have to say I'm here to stay. I just love the "plain-ness" of it all. Besides - Crunchbang runs great on my Netbook!
I do however have a few minor things I need to get fixed before I'm completely satisfied, one of them being my wifi-connection:
Everytime I turn my netbook on (or after a reboot) I have to go into bios and activate the wifi-card, save settings and then boot into crunchbang.
I've searched the problem, but most of the hits I get covers turning wifi on/off while actually in the CB environment. In most of these cases one or another alternative kernel is mentioned. (Array, linux-eeepc etc.)
Would that fix my problem? Or is there another solution out there that could help?
Thanks,

Sounds like this is more of a BIOS problem than a kernel problem, innit? You might want to check the vendor website and see if you need to flash an updated BIOS.

Well... maybe I'm wrong, but I kind of ruled out the BIOS part of it all since this problem don't occur when I boot into Windows (dualbooting XP home and Crunchbang).
I do however have a newer bios lying around waiting for me to do the actual update, so I can start with that - if not for anything else just to exclude that as a possible source of the problem...

I agree, I think it is your bios. Just because it works with windows doesn't mean it isn't. Bios are often written to cater to windows when they are shipped pre-installed. I would try finding a more generic version of your bios possibly from the motherboard manufacturers site and not the netbook brand's site.
failure is only a negative way to describe a learning experience.
i am constantly learning.

Ok... I'm the first to admit that I don't know enough about this to say what's wrong and what's right, but it seems there are several users here that has the 1000HE and I still haven't seen anyone else having this problem.
But If my problem requires a more generic bios (have no idea whether or not Asus actually makes the motherboards for their netbooks as well - they are a motherboard manufacturer after all) - Wouldn't this be something we knew about by now? Would I really be the only one?
Anyway... I'll try a newer bios - first of all from Asus - tonight to see what happens.
thanks,

EDIT:
This thing with bios (I will try to update to another one) - I can't believe I forgot it in my initial post, but I've been running Backtrack on this netbook for a bit over 6 months now without any problems... so it's not only Win XP that I can get wifi with without problems. The difference is that I can - in Backtrack - choose to start "network services" to get my connection up and running...
Is there a similar thing I can do in Crunchbang?

I have a 1000 HE(B), which is basically the same model but without bluetooth (and might have a different wireless card). Are you updated to rev 1104? The easiest way to do this is via ASUS's Update tool in XP.

Hi again!
Sorry it took a while to get back in this thread. I've been kind of busy with another project for a couple of days. (BT4 is out, Yippiiiee!)
I just flashed my bios to the 1104 (from 904) and the problem is still there. A reboot of the system disables wifi.
In windows I'm able to turn the wifi back on again with the fn+F2 combination, but I don't know how to activate it in Crunchbang because when I try fn+F2 it does allow me to switch between on/off/on/off etc, but nothing happens.
Is there anything else I need to do to activate the wifi?
