System Update [solved] (and I learned a few things), Thanks!

Hi, I'm fairly new to Linux.
I installed #! (9.04) and the first thing I did was update the system (via menu shortcut)
It has been making very slow progress, for about a day now...
This seems long to me.

The packages do change (in the terminator window) it doesn't show that it's it's using very many resources (~4% cpu) but disc use is fairly constant.

A day!? That's a very long time for an update! Even on dial-up an update should not take a whole day.

You should wait abouat a week. Be patient. God creates world in 7 days.. (Joking)

Turn off machine, run again and go in System -> Package manager. Then Click on Relaod, then Mark All Upgardes, then Apply. This is manual way to do same thing as you tried with System Update.

See if it's help you somehow..

Perhaps the mirror you're using is just slow.

Synaptic > Settings > Repositories > Ubuntu Software > choose a different mirror, close the window, click the reload button.

Do you think

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

is an easier way to do it -- maybe not as windows-user friendly (I remember how GUI  dependant I used to be   ) but at least easier and less intimidating as in fewer steps?

Thanks all!

I shut the machine off (after a total of 2 days) and it would not boot.  fortunately it was a fresh install and there was no great loss.
I did as the Mystery Moderator suggested and located the quickest mirror and the whole thing from (re)install to full update didn't take even 2hrs.
stopie: is there a difference between apt-get upgrade and update?
Every thing seems to run fine.
Unfortunately I installed SUSE beside the installation and it messed up my grub.
I will now have to learn grub, any suggestions for good resources?

btw, it seemed to be the unpacking and installing stage that ran so slow the first time...

sudo apt-get update is for updating the mirrors/repository list. Times you should run this include once after a fresh install and after adding new repositories

sudo apt-get upgrade is for upgrading your programs/the system (packages).

Well, GF coming back in town, we have one charger to share between two laptops, and my battery is toast.
Had to try something..... I would have let it go...maybe not a week thou
