there is another way: Press Alt and F2. This opens a little window. Enter the first 2-3 letters of the program (for exam gim) and then press the TAB key (left of the QWERT on your keyboard) it shows a list of programs, there you can choose the one you like.

installed the deb file and it doesnt work from the terminal or alt f2..
I once installed gentoo. It asked me for a sacrifice and would not install itself unless I gave him my neighbor's first born and my best bottle of Whiskey. -Awebb 2011

firstly tell us the name (or show us the website) of the program you downloaded. usually the name of the program (if it is gimphoto) is the command to enter in terminal or gmrun (alt-f2) . also remember that program names are Case Sensitive. So it might be GimPhoto.

"new info: for Ubuntu 9.04 users or any Linux distro that using GIMP 2.6 as their default, run GimPhoto from /usr/local/gimphoto/gimphoto.sh
(don't run it from /usr/local/gimphoto/bin/gimphoto)"

Preferences >> Openbox Config >> Edit menu.xml
Carefully study the structure and syntax of what's there already, it's a short but steep learning curve if you don't speak XML.

1) Right-click on the desktop
2) Preferences -> Openbox Config -> GUI Menu Editor
3) A window opens. It says "> Openbox 3 menu"
4) Click on the little arrow left of "Openbox 3" to expand the list.
5) Click on an entry (for example on Web Browser)
6) Click on New Item
7) In the field "Label:" enter GimPhoto
8.) In the field "Execute" enter the same line which you have used to start GimPhoto in terminal.
9) Save (left upper corner) and Close.
