Nope, it's not.

Philip has mentioned that, since CrunchBang has been his project from the beginning, he would like to see the name separated from any derivative that succeeds it.  (Also, this is pretty much the only stipulation in the WTFPL, which Philip applied to the code he used in the CrunchBang configs and scripts.)

There are hundreds of Linux distros out there. NONE of them, AFAIK (with the exception of distros that have been "crunchified", like Archbang), use the words "crunch" or "bang" in their names, nor the "#!" as part of their logo.

Is it that difficult to come up with an ORIGINAL name/logo, without using those words/symbols?

I like the closed-box version better, but what I wanted to see how it looks is sligthly different: the vertical line is at the correct place, but it should have gaps above it and below it, and it should be narrower. I'm not sure that the way I imagine actually looks good, but we should see that.

Edit: I'm stupid, forget the black-white thing, it's a logo, not a background image.

Something like this?

Is that supposed to look like female genitalia? lol

The reason why the * working name * has to be chosen is simply to have a reference, not only in git repos but here on the forums as well, instead of "the successor" or such.

the successor sounds good to me

Re: The End ... The Beginning ... And THE NEW NAME

@HELPME:  If I'm not mistaken, the potential Obxidian logos posted by exchimaera are meant to look like obsidian arrowheads or spearheads.  Common stone-age use for materials that take a sharp edge when knapped.

@johnraff:  Regarding "kickback", I must disclose that I had a song in my head when I suggested that.  Nothing to do with Linux; just thought of it because somebody mentioned "comeback" (which I also like).

aptBang Linux

apt&&Bang Linux

aptBash Linux

apt&Bash Linux

apt&&Bash Linux

aptBuild Linux

apt&Build Linux

How on earth is it possible to come up with something equally original and cool as #! Maybe just go for the obvious "Tinkerbell",
for people who like to... big_smile

Re: The End ... The Beginning ... And THE NEW NAME

Anyhoo. We need a benevolent dictator for life (pvsage) or some mechanism for taking decisions. Otherwise, this one's just going to run and and run.

Personally, I think the BDFL model works best in FOSS but if we go the democratic route we need a way of taking decisions.

We could either ask Corenominal very nicely to put a poll module into these forums or find an external polling thingy. SurveyMonkey offers 10 free questions, which should be enough.

Or just pinch SurveyMonkey's name monkey and argue in the courts that no one is likely to confuse an online survey tool and an openbox-based Debian GNU/Linux spin.

I like this one.  Probably too many syllables for the iPhone generation, but me gusta.  (People who don't believe in technicolor fantasy creatures don't have to know about the name origin - just say "it's Openbox, and it's easy to tinker with".)

Re: The End ... The Beginning ... And THE NEW NAME

Why not just use "Open CrunchBang" as the new name? The near to Crunchbang is given. The near to Openbox is given (and to open source of course). And the name (CrunchBang) is well-known.

Re: The End ... The Beginning ... And THE NEW NAME

I have typed an deleted no less than 35 lines of text here in the past 30 mins. As Im still somewhere between angry and pissed, Ill get a nap and come back to contribute when Im not so ....emotionaly motivated. Just wanted to say thank you to everyone who shelved the BS factor and have just Rangered-On. It stays true to what Ive always said about #! - community driven in EVERY way.

food for thought: Im not really feeling the "pay homage to the founder" vibe. For me it was never about the distro as much as it was always about the us. So - could we entertain tossing the "bang" template all together and maybe focus more on what truly gave #! the value its known for. The Community.

Since #! has been my HQ since the first (and second) ARCH uprisings - maybe some direction can be derived from these variables. Community - C. My HQ - my "command" ..... HQ- command & control center. ......Community Command & Control.

so lets ditch the # and the ! and just keep the C.

C2   (keeps it simple and true to the intitial intent of the distro; is also the actual abrv. for Command & Control; represents the only thing I want to take with me moving forward into new territory: the Community )
