[SOLVED] cant login in terminal and slim - Wheezy

Hey guys, i am now enjoying the crunchbang OS some month and i am practically a newbie... So i got a question which really drives me insane.. ^^

Once when i shut my notebook down and startet it again next day, i couldn't log me in in Slim. In Slim, if I enter the (correct) password, it'll show the tty1 screen shortly and then returns back to slim.. i thought okay maybe is something wrong with the gui or so. I opened the tty1 terminal to login from there. Entering the correct username and password there just shows me a quick loginscreen in the terminal (with all these promps, last login etc... but actually i cant read them its too short, about a half a second) and then "logs out" again. I don't know if it really logs out but i just return again to tty1. Happens with every 6 tty.

So does anyone have a solution attempt? Btw, i disabled the grub menu, because it annyed me too much, so i can not enter the grub menu ( i know... >.<)!!

May i can boot from a live os and have acces to the crunchbang partitions? It's a one OS system btw.

I hope somone could give me a little push smile thanks!

greets tuladir

Re: [SOLVED] cant login in terminal and slim - Wheezy

Hi,

Indeed, if you can't have a shell when you boot from the installation, try to boot from a USB stick or cd. Once you have a console where you can actually type commands in, try to mount your system partition (and home if you have separated partitions) if they are not already mount.

Once you have access to your system's and profile files, check a couple of files :

  • cat /media/mysystem/etc/passwd | grep your_username to seeif you have a shell (something in the output line should look like /bin/bash)

  • cat /media/myhome/your_username/.bashrc, same thing for .profile to see if there is any command in them like "logout" or "exit"

  • Check PAM configuration in /media/mysystem/etc/pam.d, but I wouldn't know what to look for exactly

Where /media/mysystem is the "live" mount point to your Crunchbang install system partition, and /media/myhome to your home partition.

Hope these will be useful !

Re: [SOLVED] cant login in terminal and slim - Wheezy

hey Nucky! You just solved my problem!! Thank you a lot!

The issue was, that i installe dthe zshell some days ago and tried some commands to use it as standard. In the /etc/passwd file the shell for my user was changed to the zsh. I changed it back to bin/bash and it works now perfectly again! thank you smile
