Having trouble editing files in /usr/bin

When I try opening files in /usr/bin with typical editors (nano, geany, and gedit) the files does not load properly. But conkywonky (which I know is CrunchBang exclusive) works just fine.

Can someone explain why and how I could properly edit these files using either a GUI or Terminal based editor.

Thanks ahead of time

Edit: Nano worked perfectly with /usr/bin/firefox but not at all with gcc or conky.

Re: Having trouble editing files in /usr/bin

They don't work/open properly because they are executable programs written in a language the text editor doesn't understand. Conkywonky opens because it is a text based shell script.
