You are not logged in.
That is what I get when I try to login to the main screen.
I can still use the cli and login, then run startx but that was only after I used
sudo apt-get remove slim
and reinstalled it but its still having the issue.
No my main partition is not full, as some of the other threads with a similar issue had.
Help please? I don't like running startx at the beginning all the time

Seems to be a known issue. Can you log in after having selected the correct window manager with the F1 key?

Hmm... appetentlay after
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get install --reinstall xorg
sudo apt-get install openssl
sudo apt-get purge slim
sudo apt-get install slim
sudo apt-get update
sudo rebootIt now works more or less and my operating system is now debian unstable rather than debian 7.4 so.. I would like to go back to stable..

okay.. after editing the /etc/apt/sourses.list
I was able to use
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
and get the correct kernel and all is well, till I mess something else up later.

imho
you might have to reinstall from scratch, if you really do want to go back to stable from unstable, especially if you have done a dist-upgrade!! many users like sid, and stay there. you could enjoy the bleeding edge
