I just did a system update and once the updates were downloaded and installed, I was told to do a system reboot.
After I restarted the computer, I am now loading into a command line / grub environment and not booting into crunchbang.
I cant tried installing boot-repair which normally works on ubuntu but cant get it to load up in live cd.
Any help appreciated.

First thing to do is a forum search (search icon top right of page) - there are lots of similar questions, with solutions.
You don't say what the actual problem is in detail, but to reinstall grub from a live session try this one How to chroot into #! on disk when you can not boot via grub
