Complete newbie. Also pretty aged! So sorry if I'm not seeing my problem answered elsewhere here....
I'm running XP which I want to keep: but trying to install Crunchbang too, without success. I created (I think) a live CrunchBang OS on a USB 1Gb stick. I'd used the memory stick many times for file transfers, but deleted everything on it. I followed the directions: downloaded the .iso.torrent file, downloaded and installed uTorrent to extract the .iso file and Win32DiscImager to create the USB. Everything seemed to work OK. (But I can't inspect the device contents in explorer; get the message that it's not formated?).
Went into my BIOS setup and changed the order of booting up to make the removable media 1st. Re-started with the memory stick in a USB port. It seemed to be totally ignored... and Windows just opens as normal from my hard-drive. (If it is important, my hard drive seems to be partitioned into c:\ and d:\ local drives. I was hoping eventually to install CrunchBand on my d:\ drive without getting involved in re-partitioning my disc..... or just run it all the time from the USB stick: I'm a light user)
Many thanks for any advice (but please remember I'm not very technical)..... fogey10

Welcome aboard
If I understand correctly,
1) You have Windows XP installed
2) You have 2 partitions (C: used by Windows & D: on which you want to install #!)
3) You have a 1GB jump drive on which you want to put #!'s iso
What I would do is:
1) Download Universal USB Installer from pendrivelinux.com
2) Launch the Universal USB installer to create a bootable jump drive with #!'s .iso
3) Boot your computer from the jump drive (if it's necessary to change boot order in BIOS do it)
4) Start the install of crunchbang and manually pick (/dev/sda2 ?) which is probably your 2nd partiton (D:) and format it to ext4 as root partition (/)
5) If everything goes well at the end of the installation you'll now see Windows XP & Crunchbang among the boot options in grub

First off, did you check the md5sum to see if the iso was downloaded properly?
The Downloads page has a link to How To prepare an ISO to USB - Linux & Windows Instructions. Anything of use to you in that thread?

off topic: btw damo I like your #! proton & circuitboard personas!
Very kind of you to say so
(But a PM might be more appropriate instead of posting in someone else's thread

Thanks Tamikan .... speedy help
In the meantime, I've got my USB stick to boot... it is listed as a "hard drive" in my BIOS settings editor. I've managed my first run of CrunchBang... Hooray! I didn't seem to get an option to select language, keyboard (English), etc and find some things on the wrong keys... (@ and " interchanged. I guess it's set for USA keyboard). Perhaps I'll get the options to configure these things if/when I install to my d:\ local disc.
Anyway, I've got a System to play with now thanks, and can start experimenting.

In the default Live session, in the tint2 systray (top right) is a "US" icon - clicking that will toggle to the GB keyboard.
To set keyboard:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure keyboard-configurationNB In case you weren't aware... unless you set up your usb for persistence no changes will persist to the next boot

Thanks for the help tamikan and Damo.
tamikan: I didn't need to create another USB installer after all, but thanks for the link and encouragement.
Damo: The link you give is the one I used to create my USB installer thanks, but as you see above the problem turned out to be with how I used my BIOS. Thanks for sorting me out with changing from US to GB keyboard too.
Just in case any other beginner meets a similar problem (USB ignored and Windows opening as normal)...
I went in to BIOS set-up (F2 on my laptop when switching on), went to "Boot" and "HDD" . The USB stick appeared there, and double-clicking it starts CrunchBang with the "Live"/"Install" menu screen. Changing the Boot-priority order didn't seem to work on my machine.
