I need help with screen brighness, hdmi output and the clock.

Hi, I have installed crunchbang today on my Acer Aspire 6930G laptop and I can't find where to increase the screen brightness.
When I use the hdmi output to my TV the edges around the tv are cut off on all sides. When the hdmi is connected and I play audio, the audio still comes out of my laptop speakers, not the tv speakers. Also, how do I change the clock in the top right hand corner to 12 hour time?

I have tried changing the output resolution of my TV to its native resolution in the display settings but the edges still remain cut off. I went into the sound settings and couldn't find how to change the audio output to my TV speakers.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Re: I need help with screen brighness, hdmi output and the clock.

Hi Lance2500 & welcome to #!
For the backlight issue: edit the file /etc/default/grub --- find the line that starts "GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=" & add "acpi_backlight=vendor" at the end; save the file then run

sudo update-grub

When you reboot, the laptop brightness keys (usually on two of the function-keys) should work..
If it doesn't try these suggestions...
As for the clock: go to the tint2 config. option (settings > tint2 > edit config file) in the openbox menu, go to the "#Clock" section and change the "time1_format" setting from "%H:%M" to "%I:%M" smile
Can't help you with the TV stuff sorry... sad

The issue with the edges being cut off is a "bug" on the TV, not a problem with the computer, I don't know if there's a fix for that.

For the sound, you can open pavucontro, go to the "Output Devices" section and play with the options (can't tell you what to do because I have no HDMI screen here and my memory isn't that good).

Re: I need help with screen brighness, hdmi output and the clock.

Hi, thank you both for replying. I tried to do the grub thing but when I try to save it I get this message; Error saving file. Error opening file '/etc/default/grub': Permission denied. The file on disk may now be truncated! The clock fix worked and thanks for that but it seems I don't have the permission to change grub.

I do not believe that the edges cut off is an issue with my TV because 2 other laptops in this house that have Windows 7 and 8 on them can use the hdmi and automatically not have their edges cut off. I will try the output devices settings a little later thank you for the suggestion.

It is giving you this message because you need superuser (sudo) permission to change files in the /etc folder --- open up a terminal and type

sudo nano /etc/default/grub

change the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX bit and then press <Ctrl> and "x" together and then press "y" and enter; this will save the file. If you're not comfortable with using a terminal-based text-editor, then type

sudo geany /etc/default/grub

in the terminal & you will be able to save the file when its changed. Remember to run

sudo update-grub

afterwards wink

Re: I need help with screen brighness, hdmi output and the clock.

Hi, I did what you said and rebooted and one brightness key does nothing and the other brightness key turns the screen on and off. Thanks for trying to help but I am just gonna buy Windows 7 and install it on this. This computer had a very bloated, fragmented Windows 7 full of junk and the computer kept freezing and operating very slowly  and I didn't have a Windows 7 disk which is why I put Crunchbang on it. I will just buy Windows 7 and do a fresh format and install because when this computer had Windows 7 none of the problems I made this thread for existed.

Well, it must be only my TV, because I had that problem even with Windows 7.

don't give up!

xrandr / arandr are utilities for configuring screens are resolutions. you can manually set the resolution for your hdmi screen. arandr allows you to save that config as a script you can either auto-run at boot (if you always use that monitor) or run it when you need it.
