[New User] USB Stuck on Bad Target Numbers

Hey guys! I'm a new Linux user so please go easy on me! I've been trying to do a lot of research as well as receiving a lot of help in my introduction thread. Just a quick summary:

• I have Windows 8.1 as my OS.
• I have to switch to Legacy as well as diable Secure Boot + Fast Boot
• I made a Live bootable thumb drive so I could install it on another thumb drive
• I had to install grub to /dev/sdc because it would not work with the MBR

Now where I'm stuck at is when I leave all of my BIOS settings the same, I can boot to the thumb drive now. I'm prompted with the GRUB bootloader and I select to put into it. Once doing so it seems to start up but then I get prompted with the following message and it hangs here:

I've been trying to solve this on my own by doing research but from what I've found in similar threads people seem to just complain about this issue because they don't like seeing the errors. The difference is that it goes away for them. They don't seem to have issues with booting as well. In my case, this is the last thing I get to see before it hangs.

I can't thank you guys enough for being apart of such a great community. You guys are extremely knowledgeable and I envy it and can't wait to learn from you guys. I feel really overwhelmed with this being my first experience with Linux. I feel like an idiot running into so many problems :\

Thanks guys!

Re: [New User] USB Stuck on Bad Target Numbers

See here ... post #6 ... it seems that guy there solved its problem by disabling the memory card reader, in BIOS. See if that removes the errors and if #! then starts ...

Re: [New User] USB Stuck on Bad Target Numbers

Thank you so much for sharing that! Sadly I dont seem to have the option to do the same in my BIOS ( American Megatrends). I went through all of the options and didnt find anything regarding it. Is it possible to do something similar from the grub command line or do you have any other ideas by chance?

Thank you so much for your time!

You're welcome.

GRUB options? See if this can help, although I wrote it with older hardware in mind ... Furthermore, you may want to check link at the end of the post, with all GRUB options.

Re: [New User] USB Stuck on Bad Target Numbers

Thank you very much for that. Unfortunately it didn't work though, which is suprising giving the fact that you mentioned it helped you with not being able to boot from the Live version either. I tried to do that as well. I have another USB with #! on it and I can't even boot to Live. Here's what I get (the same thing as what I do on the installation system on a separate thumb drive):

I'm not sure if any of this matters, but I remember installing #! onto sdc as well as GRUB. Why would it give so many sdb errors in the beginning? Nonetheless, it spams the Bad target number (1:0-7:0) and freezes there both on the Live version and on the installation on another thumb drive.

Any idea? Thank you so much!

Re: [New User] USB Stuck on Bad Target Numbers

Sorry to say, but I do not know what to do next. (My newest hardware is at least 4 years old, so I have never had problems you are describing.)

A stab in the dark: #! kernel is not the newest one; it is 3.2. Perhaps, for testing purpose, you can try with distro having newer kernel, which possibly includes workarounds for your problem. LinuxBBQ, apart from being run by complete lunatics lol  has some distributions with fairly new kernels. I suggest sidbang, which should looks like #!, but is based on debian-sid.

There is also VSIDO ...
