[SOLVED] LVM "The Failing Step is: Install the GRUB boot loader on..

I'm attempting my first LVM setup via the GUI installer with Crunchbang, and this is how my current setup looks:

My goal is to be able to easily resize later, you'll notice the sum of logical volumes is less than the sum of disk space, but that's irrelevant.

After I finish the partition disks step, I eventually get this error message, and thrown back from that step:
"An installation step failed. You can try to run the failing item again from the menu, or skip it and choose something else. The failing step is: Install the GRUB boot loader on a hard disk".

Am I doing something blatantly wrong with the LVM setup? I purposely put everything on LVM except for /boot and made sure the bootable flag was toggled.

Thanks!

To me, your disk layout seems OK (I have very similar, except /boot partition is ext2, but it shouldn't be a problem I think).

I would check:
- did you say to installer to install GRUB to sda (or sda1, I cant remember if there must be the number)?
- is it perhaps some 'security' and/or MSWin stuff? For example, BIOS maybe protects part of the HDD where some MSWin backup partition is? The solution would be to run gparted in Live session, and see if there some sort of hidden partition, and then delete it. (NB: gparted does not support LVM, AFAIK)

I suppose you are following this excellent LVM guide ...

So - I wasn't following that guide but I decided to now. I followed it to a tee to eliminate any error, and it turns out everything works fine as long as I don't use ext4 for /boot. So I redid my entire setup just changing /boot to use ext2, and everything worked correctly.

Thanks for the help!

Strange ... it did occurr to me that the ext4 (instead of ext2) on /boot might be the problem, but I couldn’t believe it myself, as there are tons of installs on ext4 (without LVM, though) ...

Anyhow, you are welcome, I'm glad that my 'semi-rant' helped.
