DDoS Attack 2013-10-17 (resolved)

It saddens me to report that the repo and torrent server are experiencing another DDoS attack. As with the previous attack, I do not have much information to share, but I will try and keep everyone informed as to what is happening. When I find out, you'll find out.

Apologies for the disruption.

****

Note from chillicampari (10/22/2013) - This thread has gotten pretty big, so please see the current FAQ on the situation here and How to update a fresh Waldorf install during DDoS. Thank you!

Yes, I was just about to write a topic called "Why is the repo server not responding?" when I saw your post. Thank you for the reference.

Smart people misusing their intelligence to do evil

There's a Caribbean proverb that says:
"We may hate the dog, but we must recognize that his teeth are white"

Here's some mirrors while torrents are down:
for both 32 bit & 64 bit:
http://mirror.vinnymac.org/Linux/Operat … runchbang/
for 32 bit version:
ftp://ftp.wa.co.za/wage/Software/Linux/ … 5-i686.iso  smile

Re: DDoS Attack 2013-10-17 (resolved)

While we're under a second attack, I would recommend to host the isos on sourceforge.net too cuz their servers are well protected against attacks, hardly down and #! is an open-source project  cool

PiBang/ArchBang/LinuxBBQ Darkside use sourceforge so the original too should be there

EDIT: or if you want peace of mind check Google project hosting I see that they even have a category for Linux
Now if those hackers take Google down they'll be in trouble LOL
https://code.google.com/hosting/

Forget google project hosting (200MB limit is too weak)
I'm mad at Google they give 15gb for an email and limit the storage for a project to 0.2gb wtf

Perhaps the crew at cloudflare can help you out. They have a free tier.

Perhaps you could put it in your personal file space and share a link. Works with Box.com, too. No idea if they limit bandwidth though.

@papanominal

sorry to hear about the bs man.

Well, besides the disruption with serving files.  Everything is secure on @papanominals side if I understand packaging correctly.  That's the whole reason Debian packaging standards use gnupg signing.  Nothing can be injected without the gnupg passphrase.  That was the big reason Arch had such a push for signed packages after kernel.org fell to the hands of evil

Ok, first of all, I want to make sure everybody understads I'm NOT saying this.

Being that in here there are NOT many very knowledgeable people, could you guys NOT get together, NOT find out who's behind all this, and NOT hack them back, until they're back in the stone age and their asses are nailed to the wall?

I mean, of course, I would NOT ever ask anybody to do such a thing, since it might NOT be completely legal... you know? roll

Re: DDoS Attack 2013-10-17 (resolved)

I wonder what's the rank of the hacker(s)
There's like 3 ranks according to this post in hackcommunity: link

The Elite Hacker: They know what they are talking about. they are expert in their fields, and they are the top of the food chain. They are writing the programs the Script Kiddies use, and they gain much respect as they know their shit.

The Middle Class Hacker: They know a lot about hacking, and are about to step up to The Elite Hacker. But they do still have a lot to learn. They have a lot of skills, and most or some of them will be able to write their own programs or find the vulnerabilities by themselves.

The Script Kiddie: They are beginners or complete morons. They usually find a SQL injectable site and think that they are the most l33t H4x0r in the world. They use the tools written by The Elite Hacker and have absolutely no idea what they are doing.

But some Script Kiddies are just learning and are not bragging about how they found a SQL injectable site. They study others work and learn about how they did it. These guys will definitly be better hackers and will gain respect as they are just trying to learn, not to prove that they can find a SQL injectable site.

You know I WASN'T thinking the same thing.  And I certainly WOULDN'T suggest such a thing either because I'm certain it IS illegal.  DoubleDeep fry Track 0 on every one of their HDD's!

That'd be a really bad idea (and I'm not saying it jokingly). We've earned the good reputation we have as a community and we're better than that.
