My Raspberry Pi + NES case.

I know I'm not the first to do this so not exactly pushing boundaries or anything, just something neat to do for not a lot of money and a fun reward to play movies and emulate old games.

Will start fitting things together when my powered USB comes in the mail, til then I'm picking an OS and tinkering.

Re: My Raspberry Pi + NES case.

I've given up getting Flash to work, read to many things about it not working well enough to bother. Light browsing, XBMC, maybe a little torrenting later. Should be well enough for that at least.

Re: My Raspberry Pi + NES case.

Amazon, it's a Hausbell H7. Easy enough to type on, the keys have a very satisfying feel and click albeit quite loud.

Re: My Raspberry Pi + NES case.

Going to order some wires with female Dupont connectors already on them to wire the control ports to the GPIO pins. Power button and LED on the case is going to be wired in to power the USB hub. Might see what the reset could be made to do, maybe just back to the emulator selection screen. Found a good dedicated emulator but I want to also stream movies from other computers on the network, so the search continues. No good aesthetic progress so far, gotta find a dremel.

Re: My Raspberry Pi + NES case.

Wires came in, looked up the pin outs and what not and spliced the NES control ports onto the ribbon cable.
Looked up an error code I got in the terminal while trying to run the emulator after shutting everything down, try to fix that and start copy pasting the Python script to make the controls work: waiting on the wife to finish a TV show as that's my only way to use the damned thing.

Re: My Raspberry Pi + NES case.

Glorious. Love the idea.
Although I have to ask: What do you intend to do with all the empty space inside the NES case?
I mean, I'm aware the even with the original NES board there's alot of unused room, but the tiny Raspberry Pi is going to be quite lonely in there.

Re: My Raspberry Pi + NES case.

I also plan to have this to play movies on my TV as the Xbox only does very few file formats. So once my powered USB hub finally comes in the mail, that will be going in and being wired to come on and off along with the power LED and switch on the front of the NES case, and either a 2.5" or 3.5" TB HDD, which ever can be had for cheaper.

Re: My Raspberry Pi + NES case.

be cool if the 2.5 tb hdd are affordable to keep adding a bunch into it so you can have a huge library of all your media and game roms etc...

This is a wicked cool project. I wish I had your skill so I could build something like this!

Re: My Raspberry Pi + NES case.

Hardly any skill on my part, just trying to follow other peoples logs and searching when I hit problems.
I can't get it to recognize my controller, quite frustrating. Frame size is also off when the emulator is running, and then it messes with my console size...
If anyone comes across fixes to these problems, please send a link my way.

Re: My Raspberry Pi + NES case.

And it's working! smile
Turns out that emulationstation and RetroArch don't like PiBang, first try on Raspbian and it all works. Need another USB cable to power the Pi with from my hub, and hack the power for it into the NES case power switch.
Next is gftp on my laptop and it, to stream movies to the TV.
Here's a really crappy video of it.

Re: My Raspberry Pi + NES case.

And another update. Scrapped the media center idea and going to have a dedicated one of those in a free computer that was given to me.
So here she is. The original power switch and LED are functional, doing research on how to mimic a keyboard stroke with putting a GPIO pin high and then the reset button will also be functional. Both control ports work with a classy retro controller. Will be adding hidden SNES ports after some are sourced.
