ATI Mobility Radeon Video Card Under Waldorf

I'm currently using the AMD Catalyst proprietary driver for my ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4500 series video card under Statler.  If I install Waldorf, will I still need to use the proprietary driver?  Anyone else successfully using the AMD Catalyst driver under Waldorf?

I'm not sure if the temperature of my desktop Radeon HD 4500 is any cooler with Statler, but as I mentioned in the thread about the latest Waldorf point release, just about all of the rendering issues with the generic drivers seem to have been resolved.  Don't know if the legacy Catalyst drivers are even still available in smxi...

@KT :  I use Catalyst with Waldorf.

However, I haven't accepted the recent Xorg updates so if your question is "are they compatible?" the answer is I don't know. But yeah, ATI works with Waldorf, although I don't use smxi so I can't vouch for that method.

I'm using Waldorf with 3.7 pf kernel and fglrx proprietary driver, because of better power control. Open source drivers works ok, at least with my AMD Fusion.

[UPD] Actually I'm lying a bit. A have problems with resume after suspend. System resumed, but display stayed blank. Only fglrx cured this issue.

The fan ran constantly on my Dell Studio 15 running Statler until I installed the AMD Catalyst driver.

The fan ran constantly on my Dell Studio 15 running Statler until I installed the AMD Catalyst driver.

My fan stayed on only on main. If I'm using battery - laptop is silent enough both with free driver and fglrx.

No, I just wanted to know if other users with ATI video cards had to install the AMD Catalyst driver under Waldorf.  I don't use smxi either because I'm not familiar enough with it yet to give it a try, but may do so if and when I begin running Sid.

No, I just wanted to know if other users with ATI video cards had to install the AMD Catalyst driver under Waldorf.  I don't use smxi either because I'm not familiar enough with it yet to give it a try, but may do so if and when I begin running Sid.

I installed the latest catalyst (12.10) under Waldorf for getting googleearth to work. When upgrading  the kernel to liquorix 3.7.  Virtualbox did not run anymore. Then reinstalling catalyst via smxi, smxi gave me the hint, that catalyst atm is not compatible with that kernel. Liquorix 3.6. works well, so i went back to that one. E350-fusion nettop here.

Regarding temps: fan is set in bios to run just slow up avove 50° C.

Catalyst no longer supports your card. They dropped support 7 or 8 months ago. You will not be able to use either the current version of Catalyst with Waldorf, because the support for the card is dropped, not the newer one, because Waldorf has a newer Xserver. Ubuntu LTS still has the older version of Xserver and Catalyst 12.4 in their repos, so this is your best bet for prop drivers. otherwise, you will be stuck with the open source driver.

My Mobility HD 4200 runs great just with the default Xorg driver, radeonhd. No need for Catalyst. It does gaming and Googleearth. From xorg-server 1.13 and up this card and I believe your 4500 aren't supported anymore in Catalyst/Fglrx, so if that's what you want do not upgrade xorg and use an older Catalyst version, the last one to support it was 12.4.

You have package in experimental for you card:

AMD update that driver few days ago:

So you can try some of that two releases in wheezy/waldorf, or of course you can always just stick with radeon driver that is also good here and there.

I was. Take a look at the last post in the Catalyst link in my sig, there seems to be some progress from AMD for you guys with older cards. I can't test anything, since I no longer use AMD.

Just in case you missed it, the 1.13 update to fglrx-legacy doesn't solve the Xserver incompatibility. All it does is make the TF2 beta work. I'm sticking with Ubuntu 12.04 for the time being.
