Can I do that? I am running crunchbang stable + backports 32 bit and I want to perform a full upgrade to the 64bit version. Can this be done easily? How about the already preinstalled 32bit binaries, libs etc.
Thanks!

No upgrade, you have to reinstall.

if you have something like
/
swap
/home
on separate partitions, then you can install without over writing /home.
If you do re-install, and /home isn't on another partition, I'd suggest repartioning before re-installing.
