two session, two worlds

Hi all crunchers,

quick question. I found enother great feature on crunchbang (or just linux) I can separatly customize two different session on same account. I though I can have openbox session for work - so fast, light with no additional candy stuff, and xfce for media - eye candy, animation, folder backgrounds, etc. I nned to know is it possible to install compiz, some dock luncher and all 'candy stuff' just for xfce. I know it's gonna be heave I dont need that for work but I wanted to have it for entertainment.
What U say guys?

Re: two session, two worlds

Hi,

That should be no problem.  First of all, install lightdm instead of slim display manager. Then install xfce4 and xfce4-goodies. A new xfce-session wil automatically be created for you. Nothing to configure. Then use a second xfce-panel as a launcher dock. I belive a second panel will be created by default. Conky runs just fine on xfce4. No problems. Replace the windowmanager(XFWM) with COMPIZ if you want to, but it really isn`t needed to achiveve what you want.

XFCE4 works fine by default. Just configure the "launcher-dock". Get yourself a nice wallpaper, a nice gtk-theme and a cool icon-package, install and configure conky, and that`s pretty much all there is to it.

You can also use openbox with xfce if you want to. It`s as easy as this:

Quote: http://openbox.org/wiki/Help:XFCE/Openbox
To use Openbox with XFCE, log into your normal XFCE session. Then, run this command in a terminal:

openbox --replace & exit

This command terminates the currently running window manager, runs Openbox, and closes the terminal. Now you must log out and log back in. When you go to log out, make sure you check the box that says "Save session for future login" or something like that. When you log back in, XFCE will use Openbox.

And even better, it`s not heavy at all. It runs fast and flawlessly on my 10 year old Toshiba laptob.

Re: two session, two worlds

Dear EW,
thanks for your reply, that's great tips.I already install xfce just need to make sure I have all goodies etc. (currently I'm at work) and second session on logon screen is very handy and no config as U mentioned.Back on windows7 times I was using style called major thema 3d, and I whish to do similar thing on my xfce. I belive all animation effects like shaking window, transparency, 'alladin effect' I can get by compiz, also I was using pictures as folder backrgound ex. folder MOVIES (and subfolder to) will have scareface as background. currently looking for a good soft to do this job on linux. secound panel I know U can customize resize give good theme but I'm not so sure it'll replace cairo dock or docky look. OBmenu with xfce need to consider, not sure if I want folders on desktop or shortcuts in right clik menu. Conky looks similar to rainmeter with I had on windows.  thanks and please tell me is this all can work together,
cheers

P.S. I run toshiba satellite p300 17'' 2gb ram, 2.16ghz intel dualcore. this might be not enough to handle all this candy stuff but I want to try. If it's not I and will go the way U describe

Well. I run it on the same RAM as you, and on single core 1.7ghz celeron....

Here is a very simple "howto" about running Compiz with Xfce4:
http://www.ghacks.net/2010/07/11/run-compiz-with-xfce4/

This howto describes the configuration after the install of compiz. AS for the compiz-install itself I belive you can install all packages with group "compiz-fusion"

Re: two session, two worlds

Hi,
I installed compiz and compiz-fusion. Unfortunately, after installation of compis, cairo dock shows up and after login back, openGL keeps asking me: do I really want to activate it - I press yest and everything seems to be fine with effects but I'm not so sure Is it right.
after installing compiz-fusion I got compiz manager with plenty of effects but non of the working... following 'howto' recomended by ew I typed in terminal: compiz -replace ccp &
and I got something like that:

adlaj@crunchbang:~$ compiz –replace ccp &
[1] 9897
adlaj@crunchbang:~$ compiz (core) - Error: Screen 0 on display ":0.0" already has a window manager; try using the --replace option to replace the current window manager.
compiz (core) - Fatal: No manageable screens found on display :0.0

Launching fallback window manager
^C

So I did this, and:

adlaj@crunchbang:~$ compiz --replace ccp &
[2] 9933
adlaj@crunchbang:~$ compiz (core) - Error: Another composite manager is already running on screen: 0
compiz (core) - Fatal: No manageable screens found on display :0.0

Launching fallback window manager
^C
[1]-  Done                    compiz –replace ccp
adlaj@crunchbang:~$

so, what's going on with this windows manager how should I replace it?  yikes
cheers

Re: two session, two worlds

But are you in the Xfce session or in the Openbox session, you have to be in the Xfce session.

On logon screen I choosing xfce session, when sys prompt me to use it as a default I pressing 'no'. after that i'm in xfce and OpenGL asking me about cario with or without OpenGL, etc like I wrote before.

Re: two session, two worlds

Now another thing, does your graphics card support 3d graphics because that is what you need for Compiz?
What is your graphics card:

lspci

Did you have to install any drivers for it?

Re: two session, two worlds

An Intel card, I guess it should work. When I am in my Xfce session and try the command to replace xfwm with Compiz it works.
Is another compositing manager running as it says your system? Maybe disable that one, cairo or xcompmgr, hell, I cannot remember the name of it.

If it`s Waldorf then it could be both  compton and xcompmgr, and XFCE has it`s own integrated composite manager, so I guess all of them could be a issue...
