How to install Wi-Fi drivers without wired connection

Hi guys,
i ve just installed my new Crunch. Problem is I am unable to update it because fresh installation propably doesnt support my wi-fi card. I am also unable to connect it via wire (has no RJ45 nearby). My notebook is HP Compaq 6735s with Broadcom 4322AG in it. I found a help on http://wiki.debian.org/wl, but it is only for wire-connected users. Help pls.

Re: How to install Wi-Fi drivers without wired connection

How about you try installing Waldorf. It should get you online with no problems.

Re: How to install Wi-Fi drivers without wired connection

If your wireless does not work on install it likely requires some package from the non-free repositories that is not included on the install disk.
It is probably a driver or firmware package if that is the case.
What I do in this case is to download the packages to a separate partition or external drive using another OS or computer and then install them with "dpkg -i filename".

I use the method outlined in this thread when I need to fix a GRUB install.

Re: How to install Wi-Fi drivers without wired connection

Did u install the squeeze BPO version or the stable one?

I would recommend the BPO with backports already included. That fixed wiFi and graphic problems as I was required to install packages from backports.

Re: How to install Wi-Fi drivers without wired connection

I tried every version: now the problem is with GRUB. That Waldorf destroyed it. I have "Non-System disk or disk error replace and strike any key when ready" error instead of GRUB. I ll try the arclange method to repair it.

Re: How to install Wi-Fi drivers without wired connection

Hm that arclange method doesnt work. Installation goes smooth but I still have "Non-System disk or disk error replace and strike any key when ready" error instead of GRUB. I tried to use Super Grub and with that I am able to start up my CrunchBang system but Windows 7 system is unable to run. Is there any way how to install GRUB to Windows partition? Maybe that is the way...

Re: How to install Wi-Fi drivers without wired connection

^ No you can't install grub to the Windows 7 partition it won't work and could destroy your windows install.

Did you just copy the commands from that thread and run them?
If you did they won't work, you have to change them to match the drive and partition names (/dev/sXY) that your system ends up with when you boot that time.

Re: How to install Wi-Fi drivers without wired connection

Dont worry I wont smile I executed my modified commands right I am sure. After that I checked my grub folder and everything seems to be fine. But it isnt. Its like my BIOS (or what) is unable to find GRUB on SDA. But I did my installation correct I am 100% sure (I did it one year ago on another pc with success).

Re: How to install Wi-Fi drivers without wired connection

^ Okay just making sure you installed grub to the right partition.
Have you made any changes to your BIOS settings?
If you have more than one drive it could be trying to boot with the wrong drive.

Hi,

Boot into #! and run the bootinfo script. There is a link to it in my sig.
Post the output on the forum.

Re: How to install Wi-Fi drivers without wired connection

Your sda1 setup seems OK at first sight.

I suppose /dev/sdb is a removable drive.

Verify your BIOS again. sda should be set as your primary boot device.

Try booting with sdb removed from the system.
Take note of any error messages displayed and publish them here.

Re: How to install Wi-Fi drivers without wired connection

Yes sdb is removable drive.

I think sda is primary (have no primary switch button in my BIOS as I saw it elsewhere). I have HP notebook.

When I try to boot up without removable drive it says:

Media test failure, check cable.
Exiting PXE ROM.

Non-System disk or disk error
replace and strike any key when ready.

Everything started after that damn Waldorf installation. I ve never had a single GRUB problem with another linux distros :´(

Re: How to install Wi-Fi drivers without wired connection

That is an indication that it is trying to boot from the removable drive, and that the problem is with your BIOS.

Re: How to install Wi-Fi drivers without wired connection

Going better and better hmm so now I have to reinstall my BIOS?

In my BIOS there are few choices which may help:

1. Reset BIOS security to factory default
2. PXE Internal NIC BOOT (dont know this one)
3. SATA Device Mode (AHCI is chosen)

Nothing more.

Oh now it seems like I can make it!!! Super Grub 2 can detect my Grub config maybe it is able to cure my PC.

Re: How to install Wi-Fi drivers without wired connection

Data Recovery Utility says:

No partition is bootable.
Logical partition must not be bootable.

I formated sda5 (ext4) and sda6(boot) to logical is that a problem? That was a default setting in CrunchBang installer.

What Data Recovery Utility?

No problem.

Who said anything about reinstalling your BIOS? Not me. Setting the boot order in the BIOS is what I meant. See http://h10010.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/docu … uct=321957

Can you give us more details about your computer like make and model?

Re: How to install Wi-Fi drivers without wired connection

I SOLVED IT!!!

I have read that some bad (older) versions of BIOS have serious issues with GRUB installation on LOGICAL partitions. So I formatted my sda5 to PRIMARY and everything is alright!!!

What a happy end guys smile Thx xaos52 and arclance for your help!!!

Now we can go back to that wi-fi driver issue.

My wifi button lights blue so thats OK. However I see no wireless networks. I use default network-manager.
