CrunchBang cured me from distro hopping... almost!

Hi CrunchBangers!

I'm a Mexican linguist who bumped into linux a couple of years ago when my wife accidentally dropped my hp netbook and killed the HD before I could backup Windows 7. Having been a Mac user for some time and not having much money to buy Windoze again, I finally made up my mind a) not to give MS another penny, or Steve Jobs for that matter and b) to try out Linux.

Like many others, I started with Ubuntu. Like many others, I have tried a number of distros up to a point where, instead of sitting down and reading stuff or writing a chapter of my PhD dissertation (linguistics, I've been an English teacher for 20 years), I would procrastinate by installing yet another distro. I learnt by making mistakes: many times I would do something wrong and had to reinstall everything: distro, extra packages, files, etc. in the wee hours of the morning. I learnt a lot of what not to do.

And then one day, I came across CrunchBang and decided to give it a try. I was using Lubuntu and was intrigued by the Openbox option at login. It was fast (I was left without a HD and running from usb, so that was of the essence) but there was no help there, no idea what to do to start a programme that wasn't on the OB default menu.

Well, to cut this already long story short: I tried #! 10 and loved it. Then went for Waldorf and loved it even more. Now I look at new distros in distrowatch and think "Will they be as nice, user-friendly, complete and cool as in I'm-wearing-an-awesome-black-Tshirt as CrunchBang? I don't think so" So, I can finally catch up and finish my diss. on time. Thanks Corenominal!

PS Now and then I treat myself to trying out new distros. Right now I have Zorin 6.1 lite in one of the other partitions in my brand new 500 Gb HD but I grow tired of the file manager crashing almost everytime and why choose booting in Openbox when I have #! customised to my liking on the next door?

PPS Oh, I almost forgot! I used to fear having to use the terminal, now I choose it whenever possible. Also thanks to #! I'm learning a lot with it!

Totally my story! I tried out Linux out of curiosity though, my first one was Red Hat Enterprise Linux, may be 7.2! big_smile

I feel the same ay. I've been a mac user for quite sme time and while I still use it and like my iphone and ipad, I'm trying to find ways to skip upgrading hardware. Every year or so I decide to try linux again and distro hop a bit. I was reminded of #! this last time and since I've reinstalled it on an old dell, I've been using my imac less and less. You just can't beat the speed and easy of use.

Welcome to #!
