Cannot connect to ethernet or Wireless

First off, I'd like to apologize if there is a topic the same as mine, I have searched for it and didn't find anything similar to this.

Now, I installed Crunchbang and I connect my ethernet cable. The little network manager icon turns into the loading/spinning load icon. After about a minute of this a notification pops up telling me I've been disconnected.

So I try to connect to wifi but I have no idea what i'm doing with all the settings. So I pathetically give up. hmm
Any ideas? Thanks in advance. roll

Hi crunchbang_noob, I'm just curious how you installed #! if you can't connect to the internet?

Re: Cannot connect to ethernet or Wireless

Are you connecting via Ethernet to a local router? Are you sure that the router will allocate an IP to your machine? Is the cable fine? Have you previously got an IP from that router on that machine under another OS? Is the router only allocating IPs to known MAC addresses?

Re: Cannot connect to ethernet or Wireless

I have experienced a situation previously where a particular ethernet card in a desktop did not work with the latest version of Ubuntu, but it did work with #! (Statler backported) however.

Re: Cannot connect to ethernet or Wireless

@Crunchy:  Desktop or laptop, when it comes to internet/wifi, it's apples & apples - having the right drivers installed (and the wrong drivers blacklisted if necessary) is the answer.  The question is, "What drivers are needed?"  The output of `lspci` (within [ code ] tags) would help us answer that question.

I had a similar problem installing Arch Linux, not being able to connect through ethernet.

Re: Cannot connect to ethernet or Wireless

http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/topic … er-hehehe/

Although I'm on sid I used the instructions for squeeze except step 4. and I'm using wicd not network-manager.

http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/topic … onnecting/

aptitude update
aptitude install module-assistant wireless-tools
m-a a-i broadcom-sta
# echo blacklist brcm80211 >> /etc/modprobe.d/broadcom-sta-common.conf (DID NOT DO THIS)
update-initramfs -u -k $(uname -r)
# replaced brcm80211 with mac80211 see above
modprobe -r b44 b43 b43legacy ssb mac80211
modprobe wl
iwconfig

Ah yes, the dreaded, troublesome bcm4313.

All I have to do is install b43?

Oops, I mean bc?
Hold on a second. How do I download it if I can't connect to the internet?

Re: Cannot connect to ethernet or Wireless

I had removed Crunchbang until I could figure out how to connect to the internet.
Could I just download it now onto another SD/USB, install Crunchbang, then install the packages I need?

I'm going to have to download all 3 to see how which one works. Else it'll be uninstalling systems all day.

Did I miss the post where you told us exactly which version of #! you tried?

pvsage and ozi, does Waldorf work any better with broadcom?

Re: Cannot connect to ethernet or Wireless

I can answer that. No.
I tried Waldorf, it was the same exact thing.

That's how it was for me anyway.

Damn Broadcom.

Re: Cannot connect to ethernet or Wireless

I think Waldorf would have the same depends-on-chipset issues as Statler; great for BCM4312 lpphy, bad for BCM4313.

Re: Cannot connect to ethernet or Wireless

One last question. Would installing all three modules be bad for the system?

Oh my. I just realized how much of a newbie I am at this stuff.

I have no idea what i'm doing.

Shouldn't I be able to connect through my ethernet cable?

Re: Cannot connect to ethernet or Wireless

^ You would typically only want to install the drivers you need, not additional ones. You should be able to connect through
Ethernet more easily than wireless. I asked some questions in post #4 above about this ...

Re: Cannot connect to ethernet or Wireless

Oh sorry about that. I just.

Didn't know how to answer all that. I'm kind of new to this.
I've tried countless distros with openbox, and all of them had wireless.

Price to pay for stability I suppose.
On ethernet I have been able to connect on every other distro that wasn't debian based. Except the really smalls ones, like puppy, and slitaz.

So you are not getting aconnection on Ethernet? Does it try to connect? Does the task-bar icon animate?

I connect the ethernet cable, and the icon turns into a spinning loading icon. After about a minute of this it says i've been disconnected.

Re: Cannot connect to ethernet or Wireless

right-click on the Network icon, choose "Edit Connections", in "Wired" tab click on Wired Connection 1, then "Edit", and pick the other interface (eth1) in the Device MAC address field. Save.

Try connecting again.
