Long time Mac User who loves to multi-boot.
I have been using Ubuntu for about 4-5 years now as my usual distro, but have tried other distros ( Debian based ) as 3rd OS on my main PC or as 2nd OS on my laptop. Also tried out Debian PPC on an iMac G3 which was a hair pulling experience!
I have on occasion dabbled a little bit with the terminal to fix things in Ubuntu or Debian and would like to learn a bit more and figure out how to set up conky.
I also want to see if #! works to put more life in my Thinkpad X40, since it is not exactly bleeding edge technology.

Welcome to #! natgab, #! runs on almost anything, so your Thinkpad should not cause any problems, besides there are a quite a few other Thinkpad users here, so problems specific to Thinkpad (if there is any?) will probably be easily solved. Have fun!
Time to move on!#

Welcome to #! natgab! If you want to learn terminal, you are right here. About conky customizations, we have a great thread:

And even some more if you just try the search function on the top right.

Welcome to #! -- one problem you may have with your Thinkpad is its lack of a "super" (or "windows") key -- many people have had this problem -- just type "thinkpad x40 super key" in the search box at the top right and you will see some of the threads.

LOL, as a Mac user I loved how IBM still held a grudge and didn't put in a Windows key
I hope its just a matter of switching the modifier key. I will make a list of quirks that need to be fixed on my Thinkpad that do work in Lubuntu.
I also have #! loaded on my main PC, ( along with OS X 10.7.4 / 10.6.8 / Win XP / Haiku alpha r3 ) and that has different quirks that I need to fix. I will look at the thread suggested by you and use the search terms suggested above to see what I can fix on my own first.
EDIT: Got a basic Conky working and added video drivers on my main PC. Off to copy / paste the Conky to my Thinkpad.

Welcome to the forums. Have fun and beware of Conky, it'll take over your life if you allow it....

So far, I only have a basic one I copy / pasted.
But I do like how some of the other fancy ones look. I have expereince with HTML, and the script for Conky seems to be similiar. Like I said, I like how #! has the basics installed for a basic OS and now I can practice a bit more on my terminal skills for anything else I may want to add on to the OS.
