New, and having problems with my resolution, would appreciate help.

Hello, my alias is Damnation. A user on Forumkorner.com reccomended I begin to learn Unix ect. and he did not hold my hand, but he did help me set up crunchbang. However, right off the bat, I am experiencing a fairly impressive obstacle. My screen resolution will not fit properly. Yes I have fiddled with my moniter. Yes I have tried "xrandr". In xrandr, the best resolution I can get, is 900x600. My moniter is at least 1024x(?). Perhaphs someone can help me. And before you re-direct me to another thread, I have read multiple, I cannot seem to pull anything from them.

The sticker on the front of my computer says "AMD Sempron". (The sticker for my graphics card)

Re: New, and having problems with my resolution, would appreciate help.

Welcome to the forums! smile

A good first step is to open a terminal (super + T) and run the following command:

lspci | grep VGA

This will identify  your video hardware. Copy & paste the output back here so we can take a look and help you. smile

I see that forum member vicshrike reported success with this card, might want to contact him:

Re: New, and having problems with my resolution, would appreciate help.

Relax, and take a deep breath. You only waited an hour before you bumped your thread. Remember people here helping you are volunteers. Someone will be here to help you eventually, but maybe not as quickly as you'd like. There are people on this forum from all parts of the world, and some of them may be sleeping now (maybe the exact person with the answer to your problem). Relax. If you can't relax, do some more google searching. If that doesn't help, try reading some other active threads on this board so you can see how things work here. We are a very friendly and helpful group, and we will do our best to help you, but sometimes it takes a little while to get a good solution.

Re: New, and having problems with my resolution, would appreciate help.

Do you have the correct video driver installed?
Run the following command in a terminal window:

dpkg -l | grep xserver-xorg-video-sis

If the command returns nothing, install the driver with:

sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-sis

and reboot

Re: New, and having problems with my resolution, would appreciate help.

Just a little FYI, I once used a laptop with this card and needed to install a hand-made driver which I got from here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php? … sis+mirage

A quite long thread, but it was indeed 2-3 years ago when I last tried. bgerlich or Barros Lee (I think it was the latter, working for SiS) provided the driver there, good luck!

Re: New, and having problems with my resolution, would appreciate help.

What have you tried? Did you follow machinebacon's link? Did you run the commands xaos52 gave in his post? Did you create an xorg.conf file, and if you did, what did you put in it? Did you follow the link you were given in this post by VDP76? Did you download and try any other distros, as I recommended in this post? What happened if you did? Please give us more information... "it still doesn't work" doesn't help us help you.

And please don't just say "I've tried everything" -- we need exact details on what you tried and any error messages you received.

I get this...

xserver-xorg-video-sis is already the newest version.

Re: New, and having problems with my resolution, would appreciate help.

Did you delete the xorg.conf file you created? Is it still at /etc/X11/xorg.conf? It does not appear that it's being used. If you did not delete it, please post the output of

cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Re: New, and having problems with my resolution, would appreciate help.

The info you posted is from a live boot.
Did you try installing to Hard Disk?
Did you have the same problem booting from HD?
